Don't actually collect paper money, but of the notes that I come across, I really like the current Swiss designs. This is what they look like:

http://www.snb.ch/en/iabout/cash/current/design/id/cash_current_design_principle

http://www.snb.ch/en/iabout/cash/history/id/cash_history_serie8

(Yes, that 1995 series is still the current one. The first note of the new series will not come out until 2012.)

As for the second question, the US dollar is not legal tender here in the euro area, for example, and the euro is not legal in the US. But of course businesses and others are free to accept such foreign cash. And especially in border areas that is fairly common. Now in those cases the rate may well be different from the exchange rate you would get at a bank or change office; think of that difference as a convenience fee.

In some countries the import and export of the local currency is limited or even prohibited. But since your question is about the US, that is not an issue. Cash with a value of up to $10,000 you can simply bring in; amounts exceeding that limit are basically OK too but have to be declared. (Similarly, when you enter the EU or cross an EU internal border, you need to declare cash amounts exceeding €10,000.) In other words, if I flew to New York City with twenty thousand euro cash in my luggage, I would have to tell US Customs about that. But the store in Manhattan that I then go to may very well accept the money - no legal reason to change it ...

Christian
