I was thinking about this a little more... If the dealer is high end, and therefore isn't going to work with the more common items, then giving out "special change" may actually be a very cost effective way to deal with those common numismatic items. Considering the amount of time required to grade with reasonable accuracy, put in a 2x2 (which, it's been noted, he doesn't sell!), and price appropriately, it may be a better use of time to just give away the items as a goodwill gesture, which has been worth quite a lot of positive publicity here. Even a bulk "junk silver" selloff or melting (yikes! why even mention that!) has a time investment involved. I think it's fair to say that the number of collections and accumulations that consist of only high end stuff are few in number; so the dealer is likely to get those average circulated common date Mercs along with the goodies. I think the dealer is doing something that's pretty smart. He's not the only dealer who does this-- although nothing silver, one of our local dealers makes sure that YN's including Thalia Elizabeth get "special change" from their purchases. This has included Indian Head Cents, steel cents, etc.
