Just received this today thanks to the kindness of Vespasian70 on this board. He knew I wanted one of these and had missed out on one. He found one for me and I bought it. Many thanks David. It is a worn coin but that is okay. I just wanted an example of this coin. Vespasian AR Denarius. Rome, AD 76. 3.16g, 18mm Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head left Rev: IOVIS CVSTOS, Jupiter standing left, sacrificing from patera over altar and holding sceptre. RIC 850 (R2).
Nice! You've got the scarce left-facing bust. I've got the common right... These are attractive types in any grade, really, but if I were given a do-over, I would not have purchased mine. It was an impulse buy at the last Baltimore show, and I guess I had to relearn the lesson that one shouldn't buy coin types one has not studied. I don't believe I overpaid for my example, but I later learned that better-struck "Jupiter Watchman" types feature front-facing facial details. Perhaps there is another type on which the god faces front, but I'm not aware of it. If I had known this, I would have passed on my example and waited for one like this...
Cool portrait @Orfew!! Like the near-sighted Mr. MaGoo, I think old Vespasian suffered from a bit of constipation....Hey he's always grimacing isn't he???
