So I recently found a weird penny in some of my dad's old coins. It's the size of dime, but isummers obviously a penny color and design. I was wondering if I'm correct that it is a planchet error. It also says "berty" in the left and I can't find any information on what that means.
No its a dime on top of the penny. It's an exact fit. See other post, I am having trouble uploading here.
It's a penny that someone pounded on with a hammer or used a spoon. Probably to make a copper ring for a small child.
They probably realized it was far too much work to spoon it down enough to make it into a ring. I had a friend who used to make rings with silver quarters by hitting it with a spoon. It would take him weeks of pounding every day before it was down enough to begin drilling a hole. I've started rings myself using the spoon method and gave up on them.
It's obvious that you have never seen nor heard of a coin ring. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=coin+ring Chris
