Wow!!! What a neat morgan dollar

    Does anyone know how many of these non-Philadelphia proofs were minted? I haven't been able to find any information on them (but I'm probably looking in the wrong place).

    Also, was there any special reason why those other mints made a handful of proofs in various years?

    Probably because some collector wanted them to do so. Back then, most Proof coins were struck by request. The mint didn't want to spend the time or the money to produce Proof coinage, so unless somebody specifically asked them to do so, they didn't do it.
