When VCoins was new, it was a dream come true for collectors. Member dealers were vetted and expected to be professional and knowledgeable. Over the years, it changed hands and staff as well as requirements for membership. I recall one member telling me of receiving a note from VCoins telling that a fake must be taken down immediately. That was in the earlier days when they were taking in new members that were not highly skilled but still expecting all to be 'appropriate'. Today, there are many very good dealers who still have a presence there but it is no longer automatic. There is nothing wrong with asking high dollar for items you are selling. I am less forgiving of calling poor strikes with poor surfaces exceptional. My collection is not for sale but if you are offering $10 million, maybe it is. Is it appropriate to set up a sales site with prices 10x retail just in case someone wants to pay that? I am not a dealer, let alone a VCoins dealer. If I were, I would have resigned years ago. I hope the good ones stick around so we have easy access to them but just having a store on VCoins means about the same thing as having a presence on eBay.

There are many good sellers on VCoins. Also, their service is very good. I had a problem with shipping recently, and VCoins was very helpful and supportive in solving the problem.

As for the seller who is offering the 3000+ Claudius II, looking at his other stock I get the impression that he is either not very knowledgable and really thinks that this coin is very special and valuable or he deliberately mixes in some vastly overpriced coins for an outside chance of an extraordinary profit. It looks like as soon as a coin is vaguely special he multiplies the price by 10.

The coin offered has a pellet below the bust, and according to the seller, the RIC on-line example "does not include a single pellet on the obverse." I guess the seller thinks that pellet is worth about $3700.

When I find an interesting type on vcoins and I'm not sure what it should cost, I have numerous ways that contribute to deciding. One is to check prices of that seller for coins that I know well. If they are far above a reasonable price, then I figure the seller overprices everything and I stay away.

I'll stick with paying 8 bucks for a cool altar.
