Because he or she is using clever marketing tactics to sell maybe $40 worth of coins for over $150. The amount these auctions sell for shows how stupid some people can be, and the fact they don't "do their homework".
"...but people are downright stupid." They won't get smarter by pointing it out to them or by saving them. "You only get smarter by playing a smarter opponent." Revolver
What I found most amazing is the incredible manipulation of the pictures. I counted the same picture 5 times.... never mind the fact that it's the same thing over and over again at different angles. Anyone not paying attention might think they are getting a treasure chest full of coins.... then when the 4"x4" box shows up... would leave them scratching their head!
Deception is the human race. It starts with self deception and goes down hill from there. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...abGVUG6ujI7J92hhg&sig2=QTPE2tQ17ShHYi_sAj9iMg
I think it is outragous, but as mentioned people spend the money they make how they will. Hopefully the highest bidder is not a member of coin talk. I always see these auctions and think its crazy how much they sell for.
Some of both . . . New collectors are inexperienced, and bound to suffer some losses getting over the learning curve. On the flipside, deceptive marketing is not good marketing.
"Wow, people are stupid!" Some are but in the cited eBay listing examples, the people weren't so much stupid as much as they were ignorant. Ignorance is not related to stupid and assuming that the winning bidders were just being "stupid", kinda shows some ignorance in that people buy these listings for different reasons. Not all of which, will coincide with why YOU think they bought them. In short, ignorance can be cured with education but there si no cure for stupid which runs hand in hand with irresponsible.
BTW, a poster once called me ignorant which literally incensed, until I look up the definition of ignorant. I was in fact ignorant of the subject matter which I spoke of and since then, have no problem with someone calling me ignorant as there are some things which I am definitely ignorant.
Calling someone 'stupid' implies that you believe yourself to be smart. Most often the reverse is true.
