WOW, only 8k minted and only one known specimen?? wow https://coins.ha.com/itm/world/geor...4-bust-left-large-v-with-the-dat/a/208-5828.s
There are many examples of this. The most famous one for American collectors is the 1964 Peace Dollar, or whatever it was, that was made at the Denver Mint. The official line was that all of them were melted. Another example is the “gold penny” (20 pence) that was made during the rule of British king Henry III. It was reported that Henry paid out over 52,000 of these pieces in 1257-8, but only six to eight of them are known today.
If 8,000 were released into circulation, there have to be a lot more of them out there. My guess [and only a guess] is that one was saved out by a mint insider, and the rest were melted. That would make it a specimen, not a coin for regular circulation, as the HA listing claims.]
I opened the link - $52,612 or something like that he wants? Would it be free shipping? If not, I'm moning on.
If it ever went up for auction again I would imagine that the slab, is worth more than the coin itself.
Interesting piece . . . Might be more out there but probably the population are nt very knowledgeable of at what they have
