My opinion is to simply dip it in Warm distilled water for a few minutes. If nothing happens, then try the Acetone stuff. Read up all the info on this forum on how to do that first. Use the search thing at the top for Acetone, coin cleaning, cleaning coins, etc. It's not as bad as many are blabbering about. All the details are still clear although a bit on the dirty looking side. Be carefull with what you do with that coin. Not a real lot around you know and they stopped making them too. Except in China of course. Usually you'll find the people with the harshest comments are just either jealous, only into high priced coins, like to say someting regardless or repesting something they read somewhere. Pending on your collections, I'd keep that one and probably put it in one of my Albums as it is if it was Mine. I've seen people buying a lot worse coins than that. Again, if you like it, keep it. Always remember this is a hobby and you should enjoy what your doing.
This coin is past its prime thats for sure!! A very unattractive coin Wouldt try and save the unsaveable!!
Just because it's corroding is no reason to reject a coin out of hand. It's just got problems. I have many problem coins which I'm proud to own. I am of the opinion that conserving any coin is a good thing, though not always financially beneficial. By the term conservation, I mean whatever it takes to stop or prevent the active corrosion with minimal impact to the original metal that's left. Of course, I'm a collector, not a dealer.
You may well be correct Doug, yet ANACS didn't call it cleaned. Maybe they were just being nice, one of these days (soon) I'll send it to NGC and see what they say. I would suggest a wager but I would probably lose. How about a swordfight? encil:
Sorry I took so long to follow up on this thread, but been busy. Received the coin long ago and the toning isn't as "thick" as the pics make it appear - so maybe the surfaces aren't as damaged as they could have been. Haven't decided what, if anything, to do to the coin, so stuck it in my type album for now. The next time I set up the camera, I'll try to take some better pics to post. Thanks all for your input.
