 Did you pay for restoration?

Yes I did. I wouldn't have touched it myself.

Yes, the coin is better now, but the purists won't like it.

When the toning is so ugly you can't sell the coin, dipping is the only option. The purists would not have bought it before or after the dip, so their opinions don't count.

So true. But in addition to that, I feel much better now knowing that the spots aren't active corrosion. Or at least, they no longer are.

I don't argue your point at all. If I was in the market for this coin I would have bought a different one.

@C-B-D it looks good, just not natural.

Either way, it will likely trade at a discount. I would have flipped it (assuming no sentimental value) and let it be someone else's concern.

    I like it better, also.

Yes the coin was terminal. Now it is completely dead. It looks grossly unnatural even for a dipped bust coin. The only way I see this ending on a positive note is if there is some divine intervention by the Holy Beanist who "blesses" or "saves" the coin for the sticker/plastic fans.

My question would be if you dipped the coin exactly the way PCGS did and then submitted it, would they have straight graded it?

That would have been my approach with a proprietary non-chemical process of mine, which I've utilized in the past. An in-hand inspection would have been necessary prior to any attempt/decision at "restoration/preservation".

Dependent upon the surfaces under the darker areas, you could have received a "details" coin, as I've after having NCS conserve/restore, and delivering to PCGS for a grade.

I've had relatively good success with NCS processing prior to NGC submission. I just wanted to prove that conservation isn't necessarily different than cleaning. I personally wouldn't venture that process of conservation through/from PCGS.

That was the main reason I didn't touch it myself.

Bean? No chance before or after. I knew that going into it. In fact, I know it was CAC rejected in it's toned state, since the precious owner tried to get it stickered.

Therein lies the hypocracy of the TPGs and their conservation services.

Could not agree more. I've only used them for that twice. I do it myself with sub-$1000 coins frequently. But not this coin. Realistically it's a $3500-$4000 coin.

Would be nice if there was a way to retone it nicer. I actually think I liked it better before. I think blast white bust half’s look awful personally

I like the latter simply because the detail can be seen. Don’t know if I’d buy it, though.

Yes the TPGs straight grade properly dipped coins all the time. The problem arises when one over dips. And sometimes there is no way to tell when an over dip will occur because one doesn't know how many times a coin may have already been dipped prior to now.

For collectors there is...the same process the coin underwent to tone in the first place. It's called time. Dealers don't have the time to sit on stock that long, though.

I’m well aware of how to. I was meaning in its current slab. Personally if I owned it I’d crack it and put it in a paper envelope for a few years then send it back
