haha I also sent ebay a note... and the person selling the crap. Just a nice little hope you enjoy prison/scammer kind of note
It might very well be. I was just talking out of my rear. It was more of an example of what kind of people would bid on that with those pictures.
What you guys may not know is PayPal will now refund a buyer of a counterfeit, sold as authentic, without the buyer sending the coin back to the seller, if the buyer can prove it's a counterfeit. With that in mind, who would benefit the most by taking that off the market and in doing so, gets a full refund without sending it back, plus, the buyer themselve's can prove it's a fake? Who? PCGS is who! So the current winning bidder is most likely PCGS and they have a direct hot-line number to both Ebay & PayPal so they will get their money back, including shipping. They've been doing that for a few months now. Ribbit
Just look at how long this con man has been selling off coins from his "dad's estate". I do not pretend to know coins like some of the others here, but do have a opinion on crooks from my years in law enforcement. So I guess in this sense maybe I do have somewhat of a "professional" opinion to offer here. Red-flags-a-many!!
The guy sent me a pm. Told me I am obviously smarter then him and to tell him why it was fake and he would cancel the auction. I gave him the observations listed here and said simply compare the 2. Hopefully that auction will be canceled by tomorrow. But if he knows this to be a sham. I am sure it will turn up elsewhere.
Dear Sir: I want you to know that I appreciate you very much for letting me know about the 1889 cc.I have cancelled the listing because you pointed out the things wrong.I would not sell a fake coin knowingly to anybody.Again I wish to thank you and let you know you are a Great Ebayer and a Great Person.Thank You.Gene
aahh, you are correct. I didn't see that. So, is this a win??? or a push?? The guy still has the fake piece to be sold whenever and wherever. A PCGS rep gonna knock on his door? Nastygram from a high powered lawyer? Does it just get dropped?? How does this go on from here?
Well, it's a temporary win, but there is nothing to stop the seller from selling the coin privately. Hopefully he is honest and wont do that.
To me it seems like this guy is playing the "throw it out there and see what sticks game". I spent a little time yesterday looking at his finished transactions that received positive feedback. I saw very few dollars (especially the CC's) that I thought were authentic yet folks were leaving positive feedback about what a wonderful coin they had received (and paid pretty big money for). He likes to offer no questions asked refunds for his fakes when he gets caught but what about the times he doesn't? It's just floors me about the people that are buying these with no problem... Even a somewhat experienced collector of dollars should be able to see something is up.
What CoinTalk peeps need to understand is that when they get involved and stop a sale like this one, the seller retains the coin. We need to transaction to occur and for the buyer to acquire said piece, then we can go into action and get the buyer's money back, without sending the counterfeit back to the seller, thus, getting the boogher off the streets. As it stands now, the seller still has the coin to scam someone with and considering how many fakes he's sold, that ain't a good thing. When a seller is only selling a sporatic counterfeit, then messaging the seller is the way to go but when it's known they are selling a lot of counterfeits, you never message the seller. They know what they're doing and all you've done is tell them we're onto them and they will then hide on us. Ribbit
I've said for years that I'd never write another. But - I've been thinking about it, although probably not just on that subject.
Yes I agree but I figured in this case that no one was going to shell out $40,000 just to get it off this earth. I will stay out of future responses since I am just parroting what you'all state in here anyways. I am not that knowledgable to catch these freaks ... yet...
I bet a certian well known grading company, if they knew they would get it back from paypal and get the coin off the market, might have been interested in funding such an endeavor.... but that is just an educated guess.
just an idea" I have been following this thread today Not a very nice thing to happen then thaught what if that said buyer was a member of ct and had not had the time to get on here What i think to protect the ct family is when something is to good to be ture or some member spots a large scam like this is for ct to send a warning email to all its member's i dont know the costs that this would have for ct .but as i said just my idea Dave
