@Paddy54 TBH a surviving mintage of 600 is not exactly rare in my opinion. Either the collectors in North America really love and therefore, greatly overvalue their numismatic heritage or other countries (European, African, Asian etc.) undervalue them. US collectors have over the years pushed up the price of South American issues as well and I'm waiting for them to start collecting the stuff I buy/have. Then I can retire and not worry about the price of cocktails in Dubai:D:D:D

Take any European country as an example or even ancients, some coins with just one known example would only go for a few thousand Dollars/Euros/Pounds whereas a US or Canadian issue would probably sell for MANY multiples of that.

I have some 'only known' examples of desirable coins in high grade but they would not sell for $50-60,000....well perhaps in 200 years when I'm a very old man:D

Would I pay almost $5,000 for a 'details' coin??!! For the right one damn right I would but for one with 600 known examples and God knows how many undiscovered ones.....NO WAY.

Would I pay serious money for an 1819 or GB 1917 sovereign.....if I could spare the cash at that moment in time, DEFINITELY, coz for me those represent numismatic history.

Did I totally misunderstand the purpose of this thread and just ramble on???

And BTW prices have declined almost 20% over the last 3 years as people cash in their coins

Coins like the 1948 Dollar/ 1921 5 cents silver are not that rare/ and are vastly overpriced. Same for many US so called rarities. There are many coins out there, most Canadian/ US coins are inflated by hype. However, I am not complaining, since many Ancients/ World coinage are very underpriced/ valued to true rarity. I know a member of our coin club who got a mint roll of 1948 Canada Dollars/ back in 1948/ still has them.!

It's all supply, demand, and hype. And thus it's all relative. Sure, the 1948 dollar is not rare. But an 1893-S Morgan, mintage 100,000, sells for $2500 in VG, and a 1948 dollar, mintage 18,780, you can get in MS63 for the same $. Somebody paid $47,000 for a UNC Details 1893-S. Way more people collect Morgans than Canadian dollars. Conversely, the 1947 Maple Leaf dollar, also minted in 1948, mintage 21,135, lists for one-third the price of the 1948 in the same condition with nearly the same mintage. People just want that visible date. I wouldn't get the 1948 in a Details grade, but a lot of collectors just want to fill that hole.
