Honestly, if it does get flooded, that's more money for CT and money Ebay doesn't get so who cares if it gets flooded? ;)

That is the beauty of a searchable auction/classified area.... search what you are looking for.

There will always be a limit per member and if so many peeps use the section to sell coins, then posts will be bumped back to page 2 oir 3 but I still say that's a good thing, since that will mean more peeps are selling coins on here and not on Fee-bay. ;)

I voted "No Change". An auction area would be nice, I have to admit, and any chance to take ebay down a peg would be welcome. I don't think it's workable. Who would auction coins here when there's ebay and/or heritage with hundreds of times the number of eyeballs? Not to mention the possibility of hooking a sucker on ebay willing to grossly overpay.

If you want to give it a shot (hey, there's no progress without risk) then by all means go for it. I just think it would be a tough sell.

I think a classifieds section would be more pragmatic, but I already never look at the current advertising forums. That's why I voted "No Change".

Good luck with whatever you decide, Peter.

Well okay, guess that does make sense.
As long as there is a way to filter through it will all be alright :)
But one day, sooner or later, somebody will find out about cointalk, and they will be a scammer, and scam one cointalker, it is bound to happen.
But we can always hope for the best.

I think if anything Toad it may have the opposite affect, and create more post's and discussions.

I suspect there will be posts (normal forum sections) concerning coins for sale on here and like you say, that will increase discussions so that's a good thing. :thumb:

Sorry, but not a chance of that happening. The mods never have and never will interfere in any way, shape or form with the sales & trades that take place here now, other than to make they get posted as per the rules. And we could never become involved in them in the future either.

Think about it, all the flack I get now because some don't like the way I write. Can you even begin to imagine what would happen if I or any of the other mods started saying yes or no to an auction or an ad ?

Sorry, and I am posting as a member here and nothing else, but I think that would be a terrible idea. I would venture that in less than a week we would have nothing but hate and dicontent instead of a friendly community where the members treat each other with respect. Can you imagine the hurt feelings and possible attempts at retaliation if someone badmouthed another's coin and told a another not to buy it ? This would be the death knell of Coin Talk.

    You can count on it.

    We won't, because we can't.

They may want to, but they can't. Even with what we have now it has happened several times that I was asked to intercede in a transaction gone wrong. But I can't do that, it's not my place to do that. Any transaction that takes place has to be a private transaction and any issues have to be worked out by the parties involved, and ONLY the parties involved.

Yeah, I can just see it now - "The mods get first choice - it aint fair !!" And yes, such claims would be made.

The only thing the mods can do or have any part in is to make sure that the rules regarding who can post and who can't, and how often, are complied with. That's it.

edit - I will say this. Over the years I have been asked on literally thousands of occasions by members of this forum, and many who are not members of this forum, to please give my opinion of a coin. There are even those who will not buy a coin unless I first approve it. It has been an honor to help those folks and I have without exception always been extremely flattered that I was even being asked. But in every case, I was asked privately.

I will always continue to do this.

The auction area would be much more high-risk as far as causing problems *-and-* dragging CT into the inevitable controversies.

The Classifieds area would be much less contentious and have very little exposure for CT.

Maybe start with a Classifieds area and try Auctions later on.

GD I would not suggest that it would be a responsibility of the moderators to in anyway comment on an auction item, positive or negative, but rather insure all the auction requirements are met by the seller's . Now, without allowing moderator/members to comment on a particular item in the regular discussion forums, would diminish CT's original purpose, to promote Numismatic Education through open discussions. Even the best of friends in dealer to dealer relationships have inflamed differences of opinions, and that can be communicated without raising it to a level which either exhibits vulgarity or personal attacks. We all know that is a big no-no.

This brings another issue to the discussion of an auction. We would need to ensure that all sellers and buyers are of legal age.

Adds inconvenience for both buyers and sellers, and at least $1.10 extra expense for buyers. Also prevents forum members living outside the US from making purchases.
The minimum charge for express mail is $12.40 if purchased on line, $13.05 at the post office. Tracking is not available, but delivery confirmation is for only $2.30 extra! That restriction would prevent sales by any forum member living outside the US.
That's for flat rate priority mail, so make up your mind: express mail, priority mail, or 1st class, which is potentially even cheaper for 1 or 2 coins.
That's in the eye of the beholder. Why shouldn't the transaction partners have the Paypal option if they're comfortable with it? I've personally used PP a couple of hundred times over the past several years, including for non-coin, non-auction related commercial business transactions, and haven't had any problems yet. And are you telling me that I couldn't accept a personal check from Peter, Speedy, or any of a couple dozen others I could name?

Bottom line - let the participants choose the mailing and payment methods without interference from (and tons of extra work for) the Mods!

That doesn't sound right. We currently have YN's that buy and sell on here so why would that need to change? :goofer:

Why? I am a great seller and buyer on ebay, and have worked hard to get a good reputation, and now some guy on cointalk is saying that people that are not of legal age shouldn't be aloud to buy/sell on cointalk, if we ever get an auction section?
What does it matter if you are 52 or you are 14? I am probably a heck of a lot better at paying/shipping/communication than most older people who are on ebay anyway.

In error I misused the term "express" I guess. flat rate mail 2-3 day guarantee for argument sake say 50 cents more for tracking.

P.S. And it is not just me, there are many other YN's here that sell and buy on ebay and or other places, and have very good reputations, the_man12, ryanbrooks, codydude815, goldstone, and myself are some of the ones I can think of.

The only thing I could see to limit YN's buying & selling on here is permission from their parents. Other than that, they should not be treated differently than the "old" peeps here. :D And considering parents should be on top of what their kids are doing online, I don't see that even being a requirement. ;)

    Ribbit :)

  20. tmoneyeagles

    tmoneyeagles Indian Buffalo Gatherer

    Exactly.
My parents are aware of everything I do, they see no problem in it, and not a single person I have ever done business with, other than people who know who I am, assume that I am a YN, I am very professional, and I take buying and selling of items online very seriously.

well most sellers on ebay require payment by pay pal, I will agree. Perhaps that is the way to go. As far as the oversight on my part to not include outside U.S. transactions, I addressed that in a previous post. The bottom line is, there are many things to consider. It's could to get all feedback on this proposal. As far as the personal check thing, I have had recently my horror story with that and another CT member. I think for the community as a whole, it might prevent the potential losses to sellers. When and if this venue would be implemented, I'll either agree and participate or not. Some definitive and firm guidelines must be met. We need to hear from more members on this. Peter has the final say what we do or don't do, and how it will be done. I'm excited at the prospect of having a CT auction and classified as member benefits and services.
