It might also lead people with wrong motives to come in here and fill up threads with meaningless drivel just to get their post count up.

Hey wait ! I'm guilty of that ! :p :headbang:

Ps: Someone mentioned non-numismatic related items and the Classified section. I would personally love to be able to list a few non-numismatic items so please consider a non-numismatic section in the Classified section. Plus, if you do charge a fee, you should charge more (double) for non-numismatic items, as a deterent to keep it from getting out of hand.

Also, you may want to consider setting up accounts for us to use to pay for our listings in either. The accounts would be simple and we can transfer money into it via PayPal and from that, we can pay for our listing fees and whatnots. ;) I realize this would be the most difficult thing to do but I believe it will be worth it in the long run. :thumb:

Voted but forgot to say why

Ooops. I voted that a "Shameless Commerce Division" is inevitable if growth is the goal here. Numismatics vs Barter could divide the flock.

But that's already a fact here, and I like that!

I voted No Change because now, I can go to the auction listings or the Open section and see what's available. If I want some Lincolns for an honest price, I can go to a couple of CT advertisers that I trust. For other coins I can always PM friends for advice and referrals.

If things do change and Peter tries the auctions and classified ads, then I'd use that as my first source for new coins. I don't mind change at all but I like CoinTalk as it is right now.

    Use bouth feet

Using the model of the movie "Thunderdome"; if there is to be a jump in that direction, I say do it with both feet and set up a corner of this virtual world and call it "BarterTown".

I was attracted here for the schooling, which has been tremendous, so thanks folks, so far.

And if it gets rowdy stomp on possible  incoming mayhem with both feet. To use a line from the same movie: "So What's the plan?" to which the anwser was~ "Plan? There Ain't no Plan!"

    or is there?

I think auctions or some kind of market place would be good.
There are definatly enough bright people around here to keep a watchfull eye on the auctions. I can't see where it would get to big as to be out of hand.
Also there are a few things I would be scared to buy on ebay that I would feel more comfortable buying off of trusted, knowledgeable members.

Like someone mentioned to, it would be nice for the people that come to the site looking for value advise to have a chance to sell here if they chose.

And DeOrc, I would gladdly ship across the pond, and do accept Paypal. :D

    Made you look!:)

And if some folks set up shops here you KNOW I'll look there too.

If they can keep the scholastic separated from the prey factor, it'll be a good thing.

BTW~How did I get "Senior Member" attached to my Avatar? Somebody find my AARP card without my permission?

    My 2¢

No auctions! While I trust CT members more than the average bear, we would have new CT members by the truckload. And, while there a tons of people to police these auctions I think it would be WAY too much of a nightmare! I could easily see the how the persistence of potentially thousands of new sellers would wear out even most, if not all, of our "policing members".

Now, I do like the idea of the classifieds. However, I think that there should be strict limitations imposed, perhaps no more than three adds per week and x number of characters per add. To take it step further I think that the limits should increase, perhaps granting 6 adds per week at 1K posts, 10 adds per week at 2.5K, etc...

You Points are well taken JMON. However, I do feel there are certain requirements that could be implemented that would restrict new forum members from joining simply to sell or barter their "wares" .
It just takes some serious thought.

Now I also would not be opposed to an annual fee for only member use of such venues. Current members would have a time limit on registering for those venues and receive a discount on their first annual buy-in to them, as opposed to members who join after the CT project goes into affect at a premium.

Just my opinion, it could be worked out fairly and to detract from overburdening our structure.

  13. I voted to add both.

I know this forum format supports it, so perhaps to use the classified/auction system you have to be approved by a moderator. If the current moderators don't want to do this, perhaps they could put their heads togther and nominate someone that everyone trusts and give them the position of acceping requests for the selling/auction area.

I participate in another forum that has a section that the board operator does not want the general public to view, and that has worked exceedingly well for that.

I personally would call it the Digital Coin Shop, but that's just me.

I probably wouldn't even use it, maybe once or twice a year. I don't add that much to my collection.

Not a bad suggestion for forum title Kingsley. But perhaps that aspect of things may be a bit further down the road. Either way, I think it is a very workable added member feature. I would suggest to copy the effort of ebay, Seller posts, buyers bid, payment to sellers only by U.S. Postal M.O.. All items sold will ship upon receipt of payment. Shipping methods used should be restricted to U.S. Mail express 2-3 Day delivery , with tracking. Payment for S&H should be a forum rule pre-determined , that these charges are by rule the responsibility of the buyer or shipper and when either bidding, or selling they should account for those charges. It's usually something like $5.95 incl tracking.

Far to many problems with EBAY/PayPal and of course personal checks.

There's much to co-ordinate with this proposal of added CT forum member services.

I would like to hear much more member feedback on this proposal. Common get with it folks.

As much as members of this community police Ebay for misleading and fraudulent auctions and reporting the results thereof here makes me believe CoinTalk could develop and maintain a fair, safe and enjoyable e-commerce environment.

We have a lot of non-US members so I do not believe we should limit shipping to US only, I believe that should be left to the seller. ;) As to having it Moderator approved, I agree & disagree. I think there should be a queue that Mods can access and from there, ads can be approved or rejected. First Mod to one, gets it. ;)

As to what to call it? I think it should be called:

Coin Swap - Buy-Sell-Trade anything numismatically related. :D

yes Toady, that was an oversight on my part, outside U.S. member participation and associated S&H. Good point. Thanks.

Well do you want the open section flooded with posts, to where nobody can even see yours?
I think if the one post per week should be changed it shouldn't be too extreme such as to get rid of the limit, but maybe make it from 1 post to 2.

  20. coinman0456

Perhaps the auction aspect should be limited to either once or twice per month. Any sellers who wish to register for those auctions will do so in advance, to allow designated moderators adequate time to review the upcoming listings. The classified section could possibly be co-ordinated to run monthly as a free benefit/service to all "supporting" members. What do you think?

  21. Magman

    Magman U.S. Money Collector

I don't think it would get flooded.
Especially since I hope we would change the post limit requirements up to 100 or more.
