Interesting, however, I would perhaps consider spending five dollars...certainly not anymore than that.
That coin certainly had an interesting life. For how much they’re asking though, I’d save a few more thousand dollars and buy a non-mutilated AG or G.
I think any non-mutilated coin of this year would be better saving for if you intend to get one and have or will have the means to do so. Probably a more healthy market than for this oddity. Perhaps the only thing driving the price is the coin underneath, but the difference in having one damaged but not from mutilation or one defaced in this way is a world apart in my eyes. That being said, all these of this year are outside of my meager budget.
I would rather spend the money on a problem free example of a different type coin that is within my price range. I’m content with never owning a type if I can’t afford a problem free G4 or better.
I draw the line at VF for paper money because anything less than that is butt ugly. However, I like the look of a well worn classic coin, imagining whose hands it may have passed through
Maybe to flip it. But the bigger question to me is, what did those numerals serve as? If it were digits 1-12 then maybe it was fashioned into a pocket watch at one point in time but it's 0-9. Any thoughts on the intent?
As mentioned in the Heritage writeup, it's a Whist counter. The longer versions of that game play to 9 points, and the counter would be rotated with the gain of each point, into whatever direction was being interpreted as "up" so that team's score was known. Even two centuries ago, people liked "accessorizing."
That’s exactly the sort of thing I look for in non-coin shops where you can get it for $50-100 dollars.
That would be a score. As the only 18th Century Quarter minted, it's a five-figure coin in Good or better. The Heritage sale price wasn't at all unrealistic, and frankly I wouldn't be shocked if the current seller gets his price as well.
Agreed. Like it or not from some peoples point of views that's about the only way most people are going to be able to afford a quarter with that date, and 99 percent of them could forget about ever dreaming for a straight graded VF
