I don't know. The way I see it, I've overpaid for coins that I absolutely had to have in my collection. That guy just has more money than I do.
No one said he wasn't free to spend his money as he wished, the OP asked if we would pay that for it. I agree, I have overpaid for coins that for whatever reason I HAD to have. Maybe for this guy $86k is the same as what $500 is for me, or $25 is for someone else. Good for him if it is. My main concern if I were him is that this is NOT a rare coin. 35,000+ were made, and every single one still exists. So, in absolute terms its not rare, its only the MS70 he paid for. Sounds like a whole lot of money for a single digit in grade to me. I would rather pay a whole lot of money because of what the coin IS, not for one point in grade. That is just me though. If the guy who bought it loves it, is thrilled to own it, well good for him.
I'm a laugher all day long at that price. If the buyer ends up selling it at a profit, I'll laugh even harder.
Yeah, fair enough. But if 86k is pocket change, it probably doesn't matter that the coin is only a grade rarity. It's conceivable that he's got a set of 70 ASEs and had to fill that last hole, no matter the cost, for the sake of collecting. You know better than most that some folks could care less about resale value.
"would you buy a ase $86,654" No. I have other priorities. Of course, if I had $86,654 to plunk down on a single coin....................... ...................I'd probably have different priorities which would allow me to spend $86,654 on an ASE. Who knows, it might look nice next to my MS67 CnClad IKE's or perhaps my MS65 1955/55 Lincoln and MS65 1937-D 3 Legger?
Ah yes, the pure classical collector chiming in. Bet you could get a boatload of Barbers for that money, eh Justin? But would ya spend it so wantonly? I think not. I'd think you would invest that sum more within the needs of family (how's that little tyke doin'?) and realistic ventures........
Shhh, I need everyone here to think I have no life and I will do anything for my next Barber fix. Scares the competition. PM sent.
Why is everyone so upset about that price. For a small fraction of that price, like $5, I will let you all touch mine!!!
Nope! 25 until the end of this month. 8 months until the end of the year. 6 years until 2020. Forget about leap year. Now, if I had specified that time period in total days only, you would naturally include 2016 as a leap year, but not 2020. Chris
Yep, it's already a very rare coin from the gate. With that said, the only way I would every pay that kind of money for one coin is if I could sell it the next day for a nice profit. :thumb: Oh, and besides who the heck has money like that!?!
There used to be a day when coins were actually worth more to collectors of coins than the slabs the coins were in. Honest.
