I think he is the only one who knows what he is talking about....and being a dealer on ebay means nothing...I should know because I have been a dealer on Ebay for 12 years and that and a buck will buy me a double cheeseburger at BK. Most here already know that I am a dealer on Ebay and that I sell nothing but toned coins so if anybody on this planet has a very good sense of actual market values for toned coins it would be me :) I don't use any guide values to determine toned coin values...I start auctions for .99 cents and I let the market decide....it is a highly volatile segment of the hobby with large swings in prices from one day to the next but quality piece like the one that started this thread are always going to command solid premiums vs average specimens.

I feel you. I too sell on Ebay. Mostly varieties. I also start all of my auctions at .99 cents and I've literally had an auction end with ZERO bids at .99 cents and when I relisted it sold for $20+ dollars. This is a hell of a market.

Matte proof Lincolns are well known for their toning. Novice collectors who aren't familiar with the series will easily mistake these for having AT....but that is NOT the case.

Its because of the tarnish-proof tissue paper the mint used when they were issued, which caused very nice toning when some were kept in the paper for a long time and some were taken out of the paper for proper storage. But to be honest, I like the toned and brown examples, if I were to pick a red or red-brown example, it would be a little hard telling the difference from reg strike ones. I know about the marks and the squared rims but Matties aren't Matties with out the gorgeous toning. Atleast for me....
