Certainly William I. “ON CL” at the end, so I would suspect Canterbury. Maybe Colchester? I can’t make out the first letter, but see P[for W? Or just P?]RIEC... unsure from there. An odd combination “wr” so I may not be seeing something right. The tong partially obscuring the first letter doesn’t help. I’ll come back to it, but check this: https://www.britnumsoc.org/publications/Digital BNJ/pdfs/2012_BNJ_82_5.pdf (The PAXS type is type 8), and you can also use Archive.org to get the catalogue of coins in the British Museum (a little dated, but still useful)

That is the same place I got to as well. I checked the lists of moneyers online but could not find a match.

I think it is the moneyer Spraeclinic from Winchester. It's almost a straight spelling on the reverse and reads SPRAECLINC ON PIN. The ligated letters are a real pain in the butt.

Edit: If I'm right do I win the coin?

I also think Spracling on Winchester
EMC 1018.1370 appears to be a die match and is interpreted as such.

I’m gonna blame the prongs for missing the ligatures...

So is the coin inventory or a new addition to your collection?

Coins like this don't make it into inventory. I'll post more when the coin arrives, right now I am sitting by my mailbox.

I don't think this is a right answer. All the same, let me hazard a guess. There is something Irish about that coin. Sorry, William I !

Ok, FitzNigel, whilst realising that I may be on thin ice. There are at least two of what looks like clovers, 3 & 4 leaf, a very Irish theme. Secondly, centrally, what could be an early Celtic Cross. But if you must, Medievalist, shoot me down in flames !!! :vulcan:

I’m not trying to be mean Bert - it’s just a well known type, and I was confused by the thought of it being Irish. I’m not sure when (if ever) clovers were on Irish Coins, but their hammered coins are either immitations of Anglo-Saxon coinage of Æthelred II, or issued by English kings. I’m guessing where you see clovers is in the four quadrants made by the cross. Those are four letters spelling “PAXS” within circles.

I keep meaning to get an Irish penny of King John, but keep forgetting to...

I also need an Irish John Penny as it is the only coin issued in his name.

Y'all are making me want one now. Either of the styles posted would be a new adventure for me. These style coins have always intrigued me.
I read these posts to hopefully get an idea of what I should be looking for.
    Wonderful coins as always guy's.
