Decided that I have to have a 1 oz Gold eagle for some reason but I am wondering if it is worth buying a graded one. I have found non graded for around $1350. A MS70 seems to be about $1550 on ebay. Does the grading justify spending so much more or is the grading more of a gimmick for gold eagles. I understand the point of grading for older circulated coins, just not sure there is much point for the American eagles. Thanks for any advice.
I'd advise you to not get a graded one, it will be tough to recoup any extra premium paid when it comes time to sell.
Good choice on buying a Gold Eagle, watch ebay closely in the next 6 weeks. Smaller sellers may be looking to sell a 69 or 70 graded coin at a bargain price to free up some cash for Christmas. I have got some great deals on gold this time of year, be patient. I personally like buying graded gold pieces, you tend to get a better looking coin.
You can get a proof gold eagle straight from the mint for $1610. The final mintage of those will probably in the 25,000 range vs. 700,000 of the bullion version. I think the proof will have more long term upside than a MS70.
I prefer to have them in bullion form, ungraded. Now, if I can buy a MS69 for the same cost as a non-graded, why not. I'm not paying any more and I get an authentication guarantee from a reputable (this is currently debated) company.
If you're talking about a bullion coin then no I wouldn't pay extra for a graded one , for a proof maybe .
go raw, u can send it in if u want it graded. for the 2010, 11, 12, 13 1oz eagles ngc has only certified 4 as MS68 so your chances of getting a 69/70 seem pretty good lol
Don't waste your money on slabbed common bullion, the premiums are for suckers. Plus it's a pain in the butt cracking them out of the holder to make sure their not a Chinese fake. ;-)
