In my opinion, it would have to be this:

Let the bashing begin, but that is just an ugly depiction of LIBERTY!

I like most US coins. I like the SBA and Ike dollars because as a kid my granfather bought me a 1975 to 1980 proofs sets. I use to look in awe at the the interesting dollar coins. SBA included. My 3piece Bi-Cent silver set made me drool. Because those sets sparked my coin interest, I always have a love for the Ika and SBA even if they are not the best looking coins. I have to say the Prez series is the first series that is really beneath us as a coin series. The current designs would have looked ok in basic clad, but it looks awful in the gold makeup. The Sac was nice, although I would have like a liberty design more.

I'd have to say SBA for circulated coinage
and the 1995-P Special Olympics Silver Dollar for commenorative coins.
Makes Susan B. A. look gorgeous!

    UUUUUgly!

I think I figured it out! The mint took the old Chief and reversed his portrait and added a bad hairdo for the 1995-P Special Olympics Silver Dollar. LOL!

I'm one of those who are extremely disappointed with the presidential dollars. What a way to ruin a good idea! These look like second-rate tokens.

Why not have real artists come up with designs? Also, I agree very much with the idea that having real people on coins usually brings their design values down a notch: the allegorical figures are much more poetic.

  7. the 2009 sac dollar is definitely the worst design (on the reverse)

i dunno. it must be a trend with the new dollar coins... SBA kinda boring, sac alright until they started innovating, and then the presidential dollars... meh... all pretty dull designs leaving a lot left to be desired.

maybe they're trying to get people to use the dollar coins more by making them so hideous that nobody wants to keep them?

I actually like the SBA and the Sacajawea. I think the worst design was the Franklin half. It may not be any uglier than the new Prez dollars, but why couldn't they think of a better design to replace the Liberty Walking?

  10. well the franklin half when compared to the walking liberty does seem pretty dull... then again so would anything else. the walking liberty half was a pretty great design.

however i think the franklin is better than the kennedy half. for some reason it just seems... generic, especially the reverse.

What's really scary is he gave her the indian profile, and the coin really didn't change!

Oh and bad design,Wyoming quarter Bad portrait on the obverse, busy with too many inscriptions, l relief, and a reverse designed to grade Good right out of the dies (Design flat and smooth with no detail remaining.)

Maybe this is just another way to get to the same conclusion reached by lots of previous posters, that the Ike and Sacs were the worst. However, it seems to me that "design" has more to do with function than ugliness. A bad design for a coin would be one that impaired its functionality as money. As a collector I might like coins for their history or their beauty, but primarily they are made to be money. The Ike would qualify as "bad" because it was too big and heavy for people to carry around to use as money, and the Sac would also qualify because it was too much like a quarter and confused too many people.

Actually the Ike does have one redeeming grace although it's a non-money one. Because it's so big, it's the best for "flipping" at the beginning of a youth baseball game to determine which team bats first.

I wonder if there are other nominees for US circulated coins whose design was bad for its function as money? Could you say that All US circulating coins after 1964 (except the 1965-1970 Kennedy half dollars and the pre-1983 1 cent coins) are "bad" as money because they have virtually no intrinsic worth?

I won't bash you as I completely agree, but I will take it one step further. IMO, the ugliest design of all time is the 1792 Half Disme. A banshee on the obverse and a turkey on the reverse.

As far as some of the other ugliest selections in this thread, I will let them all go except for the Jefferson Nickel. Now Fish, I understand your disapproval of real people (Presidents) on coins and would prefer representations of lady liberty, but can you really honestly say that the Jefferson Nickel design is ugly. WOW!

A stately portrait of Jefferson and a beautiful Monticello, what more could we ask for from a coin design. Gotta defend my favorite, sorry Fish.

    Ike Dollar
    38.1 mm
    22.68 g (clad)

    Morgan & Peace Dollar
    38.1 mm
    26.73 g

The Ike Dollar was the same diameter as the Morgan & Peace Dollars but it weighed less (because it was not 90% silver). Would that make Morgan & Peace Dollars (and earlier Silver Dollars) worse designs than the Ike?

You can say if you want, but the reality of the situation is they do have intrinsic worth. The metal used to make those coins cost money, that means it has worth. It just doesn't have a worth that equals the face value.

But then, coins never did, even the silver and gold coins. People always seem to forget that little fact. But no silver dollar every had a dollars worth of silver in it. And no double eagle ever had 20 dollars worth of gold in it.

So for people who complain about this fact - our current coins not having any intrinsic value - they are complaining about the wrong thing. What they should be complaining about is that our current coins have less intrinsic value than before - that's all.

And if you want to get right down to it - nothing has any intrinsic value. The idea itself is a myth. Gold, silver, diamonds - what have you - it's all the same. The materials only have value because we are willing to accept them as having value. It is an idea, nothing more.

Think I'm wrong ? I'm not. For example, would you say that sea shells have intrinsic value ? Or how about knotted cords of string ? Or large stones ?Why not ? They were all used as money once. And they were used as money because people were willing to accept the idea that those objects had value.

Want more proof ? Well it's so simple it's pathetic. What do you use to go buy that gold and silver that you think so highly of ? You use that worthless money that has no intrinsic value.
