This  unthinkable order made it It illegal for private everyday citizens to  own gold coins, unless or course they  clearly had a collectible value.  This law was ignorantly  enacted during some pretty desperate  times to prevent the accumulation of gold currency.  With no  more gold currency being issued in the United States, the Mint melts  down the  1933 run of Gold Double Eagles and converts them to gold bullion bars  by 1937.
