Germany Archbishopric of MAGDEBURG Cathedral Chapter Reichstaler 1638

The archbishopric of Magdeburg was long in the hands of the Hohenzollerns, the ruling family of Brandenburg. Christian Wilhelm of Brandenburg was Protestant Administrator in 1631 during the 30 Years' War when in 1631 Imperial troops captured the city. The Cathedral Chapter deposed Christian Wilhelm in favour of the Catholic claimant, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, younger brother of Emperor Ferdinand III. Leopold William was confirmed as Administrator at the Peace of Prague in 1635, with the Cathedral Chapter as regents. Leopold Wilhelm waas already quite busy, being Prince-Bishop of Passau, Strasbourg .Olmütz, Breslau, Halberstadt and Bremen, although never a member of the clergy. In 1638 the Protestant Swedes captured Magdeburg and the Protestant Augustus of Saxe-Weissenfels took over as Administrator.

1638 taler, Transylvania(Sibiu/Hermannstadt mint), Georg Rakoczi I, imitation of a Utrecht/ Overyssel daalder, KM 240.1. Funny enough, i bought it from the Netherlands and the dutch experts had no ideea it's a transylvanian piece, though the legends are wrong and the style is too.

Here are 2 that finally showed up after a shipping error. The seller was very professional and made it right. I already posted these in another thread but they are so nice in hand.

Germany Archbishopric of MAINZ Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal Medallic Konventionstaler 1795

During the Napoleonic Wars the French had ineffectively besieged Mainz since Dec. 1794. In Sept.-Oct. 1795 a Habsburg army led by François Sebastien Charles Joseph de Croix, Count of Clerfayt (how's that for an aristocratic name ?) attacked and chased them away. The French suffered huge casualties and loss of artillery. This Taler was struck to commemorate the relief of the siege.
Obv. upper legend: DEUTSCHLANDS SCHUTZWEHR (Germany's protective defence) and in exergue DURCH CLAIRFAIT ENTSETZT (relieved by Clerfayt) / DEN 29TEN OKT./ 1795.
Rev. legend: DEN ERRETTERN_ DES VATERLANDS (to the saviours of the Fatherland)
