Germany Archbishopric of MAGDEBURG Cathedral Chapter Reichstaler 1638 The archbishopric of Magdeburg was long in the hands of the Hohenzollerns, the ruling family of Brandenburg. Christian Wilhelm of Brandenburg was Protestant Administrator in 1631 during the 30 Years' War when in 1631 Imperial troops captured the city. The Cathedral Chapter deposed Christian Wilhelm in favour of the Catholic claimant, Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, younger brother of Emperor Ferdinand III. Leopold William was confirmed as Administrator at the Peace of Prague in 1635, with the Cathedral Chapter as regents. Leopold Wilhelm waas already quite busy, being Prince-Bishop of Passau, Strasbourg .Olmütz, Breslau, Halberstadt and Bremen, although never a member of the clergy. In 1638 the Protestant Swedes captured Magdeburg and the Protestant Augustus of Saxe-Weissenfels took over as Administrator.
