Just did some horse trading with Ag76 and came up with this beauty! 1966 French New Hebrides 100 francs
Thanks for the swap, @coin_nut! I'll be posting my end of it after it finishes the traditional distilled water soak. (I do it with every coin as a merely prophylactic measure! )
I must admit I have been washing coins lately, after I noticed how dirty my fingers were after sorting through a kilo of mixed world coins. Yesterday I carefully dumped that whole kilo into a basin of soapy water, then washed each one with a fingernail brush, soft plastic bristles. Rinsed well and dried with a soft cloth, then air dried under a fan for a couple hours. Some had hunks of wax or grease on them, which I picked off with a wooden toothpick. I also recently washed a big load of Indian bank tokens, which all looked like they had been handled by a lot of dirty hands. I wonder if rubbing alcohol would be a good bath for coins? I think it would take away any water in their nooks and crannies, also strip away any oil.
I regularly use "Rubbing Alcohol" or, as we call it in the UK "Surgical Spirit" to clean excess grease and grime off coins. With a few drops of detergent in it, it can can have miraculous effects! Not suitable for long soaking as it can bleach the patina after a few days.
Great-looking coin. That one is on my wishlist. Seems you can get a high-grade example at a reasonable price.
Picked this up just this week. I thought it was a cool type and the history is kind of neat. These were produced by Spain during the Spanish war of Independence when the Spanish were fighting in the Napoleonic wars.
