Is that a Habsburg chin I see? Interesting coin. Also one of the nicer, less obtrusive countermarks one sees.
A Habsburg chin indeed ! As for the countermark, in the face of an influx of debased coinage, in 1681 the Archbishop of Salzburg, Max Gandolph Graf von Kuenburg, decreed that Guldiner and 1/2 Guldiner circulating in Salzburg should be countermarked to guarantee their value, for a fee of 1 Kreuzer for Guldiner and 2 Pfennig for 1/2 Guldiner. Due to the fee, relatively few coins were submitted and the order was repealed in 1682. Here is another example: Austria TYROL Archduke Leopold V of Tyrol Reichstaler 1632 with Salzburg countermark (Incidentally, Leopold was the younger brother of Emperor Ferdinand II but he seems to have escaped the Habsurg jaw !)
