I actually diversified the gold into some historical pieces partially because we moved to Europe. And since I was a history buff, I started with the same suggestions above (Prussian and French 19th c-- which are a dime a dozen on the Continent) but saw quickly that beautiful Louis d'Or or 1/2 Louis can be had circulated for nearly the same cost. And then, some of the Austrian-Hungarian and Bavarian coins are not so costly and also beautiful. Plus, there is always a nice St. George killing the dragon on the reverse British Imperial sovereign.
