I am finding the world coins and banknotes are a breath of fresh air, and the beauty amazing. Stumbling into them by accident has opened up a whole new *world* to me, and has generated a coinbug in my wife as well. The closest thing America has to the beautiful artwork on some of the foreigns is the Standing Lib quarter IMO
Added bonus......She will be willing to travel to more coin shows, but I will never get her to Florida for F.U.N. unfortunatly.
I love the sovereign design, I got a half sovereign (same design, about .11oz) for $5 over melt in very high AU. Similar deals are available on full sovereigns at my local B&M
Now THATS a good looking coin as well, I'll put that one on the list. I think in 2 months I'll have studied and read enough to buy one or two at Long Beach. Thanks guys !! Edit to add found this book: http://cgi.ebay.com/Standard-Catalo...goryZ547QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Bullion-wise, the Isle of Man cat series is a nice start for 1/25th oz. They should not be too hard to obtain for around $40 a pop. I think there are a total of 13 that complete that series: Manx, Alley, Norwegian, Siamese, Maine Coon, Japanese Bobtail, Turkish, Burmese, Long Haired Smoke, Birman, British Blue, and two "History of the Cat", one with a cat stalking a spider, and the other with a Egyptian Mau cat wearing an earring with two pyramids in the landscape. You can also get a Year of the Cockerel (or all 12 year cycle animals?) in the same weight from the Isle of Man series. Andorra has a couple of 1/25oz. 5 Diners animal coins as well in their "Wildlife" series. There is the Chamois and Brown bear with cub, and in silver, they have the 10 Diners Red Squirell, Chamois, and Bears. A 1/2oz gold 50 Diners coin would complete that series, I believe. Australia has two different 1/20oz gold $5 coin with a kangaroo on it, one with a wallaroo, and one with a wallaby. I have no idea what the real difference between those three animals are, since they all look the same to me. Bahamas has a nice little gold coin. It's about 1/36oz gold, 1973 $10 with a Tobacco Dove on it. This is the one that has the fineness on it. The ones without fineness are about 1/29oz and very so slightly more expensive. If you want to go as high as 1/12oz, you can get the $50 version...or all three! Belize has about a 1/40oz gold $50 coin with a hummingbird on it. As well as more expensive 1/10oz $100 coin with sea creatures and animals on them. As well, Bermuda has some 1/10oz $10 coins, one with a heron, the other with a bluebird, as well as a frog and pig. Bosnia has a 1/25oz series on horses, "1/25 Suverena" trade coins. The series extends in 1/10, 1/5, 1/2, and 1oz weights also. British Virgin Islands have about a 1/23oz $50 with a dove on it. China has Pandas, of course. But, they also have a 1/20oz 1995 5 Yuan coin with a unicorn on it, as well as the same denomination with a panda on it...REAL coins, not just bullion. 1996 had a similar 5 Yuan with a unicorn bust. 1983 produced a 1/10oz 10 Yuan with a panda, as did 1984 and 1987. 1988 produced a nice bimetal 1oz silver ring with 1/10oz gold center panda 10 Yuan. 1990 gave us the 1/31oz 10 Yuan panda, and the next year and the year after, they decided to make it a whopping 1/10oz 10 Yuan. In 1993, the panda went platinum and left the gold for the birds. 1993 saw the 1/10oz gold 10 Yuan peacock coin and the Year of the Rooster 8-sided round coin...basically, China is filled with a number of actual denominated coins with 1/10oz and under AGW and animals on it. Cook Islands bring us a rather interesting 1996 $20 gold coin for "Year of the Mouse". It depicts, of all things, a colorized Mickey Mouse. Go figure. They're 1990 Endangered Wildlife series is WAY better with a series of 12 coins denominated at $25 with 1/25oz each. They include Bison, Longhorn Sheep, Tiger, Eagle, Elephant, Lynx, Bee Hummingbird, Koala, Panda, Przewalski's Horse, African Lion, and Butterfly. Cuba has a 1999 5 Pesos 1/20oz with a hummingbird, I believe. In 1995, Gambia made a two coin Endangered Wildlife series with a Black Rhino and an African Elephant. These coins denominated at $20 and contained about 1/6oz gold. Gibralter did some interesting pieces for their 1/25 crown (1/25oz gold). There was a Peter Rabbit series with 10 coins, I believe. Their 1/25 Royal series on dogs includes 7 dogs: Corgi, Cocker Spaniel, long haired Dachsund, Pekingese, Collie, Bull, and Yorkshire Terrier. This series was also done in 1/10 Royal (1/10oz gold). Israel has a few 1/10oz gold coins. These are denominated New Sheqels from 1992-1998 and include: a Roe, a Hart, a Leopard, a Fox, a Nightingale, a Lion, and a Stork. Ivory Coast as a 1/10oz 10 Francs with an elephant on it. Macao has a lunar series just over 1/10oz gold denominated at 250 Patacas including: Year of the Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger, and Rabbit. Malta in 1975 produced a 1/11oz 10 Liri coin with, of all things, a Maltese Falcon on it. They followed the next year with a Swallow-tailed butterfly. Mongolia did a 1/20oz 100 Tugrik and a 1/10oz 200 Tugrik Year of the Monkey and Year of the Rooster coin for 1992 and 1992, respectively. 1998 saw the release of a 1/20oz 500 Tugrik Year of the Tiger coin (careful, there's a gold PLATED 1oz silver version out there). Consecutive years of lunar coins can be found in this denomination. Nepal has a 1/10 Asarfi (1/10oz gold) with a Snow Leopard on it. Niger has a 1/10oz gold 1968 10 Francs with ostriches on it. Palau has a 1/25oz gold dollar with a dolphin on it...the topless mermaids on the obverse are just your personal added bonuses. There are also dollars with a turtle, manta ray, and shark on them. Poland has a 50 Zlotych from 1995 with 1/10oz gold depicting a Golden eagle. Seychelles has a 50 Rupees weighing in at 1/20oz gold depicting a Milkweed butterfly, and a 1/10oz 100 Rupees of the same design. Singapore produced two 1/25oz gold dollars with a lion on it for 1996 and 1997. And previously $5 versions with 1/20oz in 1990-1995, followed in 1996 with a 1/10oz version. 1/10oz versions were also found in $10 denomination from 1990-1995. The $10 then turned to 1/4oz. ... Not a completely exhaustive list, but it's a starter for world gold weighing in at 1/10 and under with depictions of animals, birds, and fish. Hope it helps!
I see krugerrands regularly selling on ebay for way over spot. Mainly due to their popularity. Maybe from a dealer you will get a better price...but not on ebay.
Now Now Spock ...... which of these type gold coins did you get MS65 and above, much less MS67, at spot or below in the last few years ..........the rooster, the angel, the sovereign, ducat, russian coins, nordic countries, germany, thailand. The spot price I'm assuming your meaning is the spot price of gold at the time you bought the coin not todays $900+ quotes.
I'll run this question by the boss Jack but from what I see a lot of the world gold that walks in the store tends to go at a low premium.
gold was between 800-1000 dont remember exactly got these at spot the angel, the sovereign, ducat, germany, swiss below spot thailand nordic gold even the GM of world gold fell out of his chair on the below melt deals remember as the GM says you make your profit when you buy

Fanams!!! Titchy wee Indian gold things but cheap as chips (as far as the old Au coinage goes) Bout a tenner ($20?) each methinks.
Hey GDJMSP, still have some of museum grade gold laying around. Thought you tired of it like your American Coin Collection a number of years ago and had a dealer deal it off. If I remember correctly you had the first franc or something, Franc d'or à cheval?
