PCGS slabbed this as a mint error (wrong planchet). While this <i>is</i> struck in bronze instead of aluminum-bronze, the <i>mint error</i> part doesn't make any sense to me. There were no bronze planchets in use for another coin during this time period that could have accidentally made its way into the hopper, and any bronze planchets possibly left around for decades from previous bronze issues would have been way too small for a coin of this size to strike fully like this (think striking a quarter on a planchet smaller than a nickel).</p><p><br /></p><p>I am in the process of doing more research on this piece, but my educated guess is that it is actually a pattern (off-metal trial strike in bronze), and possibly unique. Of note, 1983 is the first year for this type. There <i>is</i> a recognized pattern listed but it is dated 1982 and is struck in aluminum-bronze, the same as the business strikes.
