<p>[QUOTE=&quot;Stork, post: 3070147, member: 71642&quot;]From a Japanese auction recently, missed out on my &#039;goal&#039; coin, but this was a nice consolation prize.&nbsp; Nowadays there are a few slabbed (and pricey), but this one is raw (pricey, but much less so), and accompanied by a JNDA (Japanese Numismatic Dealer&#039;s Association) certificate.</p><p><br /></p><p>[ATTACH=full]771375[/ATTACH] </p><p>It&#039;s from the post war era, and the issuing authority is &#039;Government of Japan&#039;, a transitional time before the new constitution was put in place for the current government system.&nbsp; </p><p><br /></p><p>The 50 sen denomination survived the war.&nbsp; Previously in silver, this is the &#039;large size brass&#039; type featuring the phoenix obverse, and the reverse with fish/rice/hammer etc.&nbsp; The first year of minting was in 1946 and the coins weighed 4.5 grams.&nbsp; </p><p><br /></p><p>By the next year even that much brass exceeded the face value so a new coin was minted, weighing in at 2.8 grams (naturally called the &#039;small size brass&#039;).&nbsp; </p><p><br /></p><p>The entire mintage for the large size in 1947 was supposed to have been recalled/withheld/never released.&nbsp; However, some coins escaped and there are large size 50 sen coins on the market.&nbsp; Heritage sold off one in 2011 for example.</p><p><br /></p><p>This one appears to have a wee bit of environmental issues, though I am a LITTLE tempted to see if NCS could do something to make sure the surface stays stable.&nbsp; I&#039;m hesitant though because the JNDA certificate photo might not match the coin as well (photo is dark, but you can see the same surface issues).&nbsp; On the other hand the JNDA cert photo minimizes the discoloration so perhaps it&#039;s progressing.&nbsp; </p><p><br /></p><p>[ATTACH=full]771377[/ATTACH][/QUOTE]</p><p><br /></p>
