Though separate countries internally, Franz Joseph I was crowned as the King of Hungary, and the two countries shared common ministries of foreign affairs, defense, and finance. This compromise lasted until 1918. The obverse features Ferenc Deák, one of the Hungarian authors of the Compromise of 1867, with Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth on the reverse.</p><p><br /></p><p>During the period of the Compromise, Austria and Hungary&#039;s coinage was closely linked together with common denominations, but each country struck their own types. Interestingly, since Franz Joseph I was crowned the Emperor of Austria in 1848, but King of Hungary in 1867, the two countries had different jubilee dates and thus commemoratives that did not match up like the other coinage generally did.
