Both were designed by the Hungarian sculptor Lajos Berán (1882-1943).</p><p><br /></p><p>The pengo denomination was designed to replace the massively inflated Hungarian korona after WWI. The word pengo is an onomatopoeia for the sound of a ringing bell (as in the sound of a ringing silver coin), meant to instill confidence in the new currency.
