Not often do I buy modern coins, but I came across this beauty and couldn't pass :

Modern, as in post-first republic? Nice one, I have the same coin in AU58. Not nearly as common as the 1811 plus it was struck while Napoleon was off in Russia getting crushed. The beginning of the end as it were.

    Thanks Prince.
BTW, how do you grade mine, as I'm not familiar with grading ?

Mine is in an NGC or PCGS slab (forget which at the moment) and looks very similar to yours. I would say yours is also an AU58 that might even sneak by as an MS60 or MS61 were it not for the very minor rim tap at 1:00 on the obverse.

Very Nice double Napoleon. I think a Napoleon was 20 francs? These typically come like this, unlike the Bonaparte 20 francs which come quite sharply struck on the wreath.
I used to collect French coins but gave it up as I found myself spread too thin (used to collect Ancients: Greek & Roman, Latin American, French + Polish). Nonetheless I too have one (Bonaparte 40F).

My pix is far too shiny and isn't faciliated that I have to go to the SD box to get the coin out to re-photo it AND having dropped my old digital camera I have to wait till after Xmas for one with working focus.

This is a Modern coin, I think "Modern" is anything which is defined as post-Renaissance or basically anything after 1600 or so. With French I guess the "Gadory" or "Le Franc" require separate volumes for Ancien Regeime [spelling] e.g. the pre-Revolutionary Monarchs.

I tried to rent a motorcycle once. They would only rent me a scooter. It had a top speed of maybe 30 mph or 35 going down a steep hill. It would'nt be too bad except I used it to drive extremely long distances. Also I too collected unwanted but "price unlisted" Latin American coins.

I found one that sold in the 1982 Hammel Sale by Stack's. After talking with them that's the only auction appearance we could find until the coin (Peru 1 Escudo, 1850 Lima) was auctioned around 2010 by Heritage. Nobody else wanted it and I'm making an unwanted Peru early (ca 1820 - 1850's) set from 1/8 real to 8 escudos gold, all in mint state. [this coin is only a choice AU, but I amde an exception due to the rarity] I think it's the same coin (the Hammel specimen). Also know of another rare one: it's a Bolivian 4R 1840 or thereabouts in fine or vg grade from the Oruru mint. Ex Whittier, it was listed as "unique". The Bolivar Military Busts are ugly usually even in unc, by the time you get to "vg" they are a more than a match for your coin in terms of ugliness.

I wonder if all who buy very rare, but ugly & cheap, Latam coins also rode scooters at one time or another? You should do a poll. Hope I didn't offend, I don't think your coin is ugly at all tho it doesn't look quite the same as a 1978-s DMCP Ike that most here see as "the ultimate coin".

8 Escudos struck in 1863 which is technically after the introduction of decimal coins...,, But what a coin! Finest known. Pop 1/0 for the issue. If I had an extra 4 grand the coin would already be in my collection. Teller claims there is one finer, but it's the overdate in MS65 and not the same issue he has offered. I guess the coin is too handsome, and does fail the ugly requirement, but I like Peruvian coinage from that era too, so had to share this one.

Thanks very much but I'm flat broke right now. It is a very nice coin, however. My wife is still upset with me for buying the Claudius II this summer which now serves as my avatar. However, I ask you, how could I join this site without a nice avatar?

Funds are very tight right now but I should keep looking at Teller. I used to buy from him but I think I became a "non-preferred" customer after returning a French "100 days" 5 francs. Also I don't know if grading Co, population is the same as true rarity. I really need to find out how to get these population reports....

Thanks for showing me Teller's 1863 8E, unfortunately I already have an earlier type of 8E shown here:

Finally someone posts a pix of a coin which is issued before 1960! I really like the Latam minors as these were the coins that actually circulated in the countries. I've been told that the crowns were made for and only saw export to Europe, and possibly the US where they were legal tender here until 1857.

These things were produced in such small quantities I wondered how they sufficed. I've never seen the inverted N specimen. I do have an 1830 Bolivian 1/2 sole, [aka 1/2 real] from a Jim Elmen auction described as unc. Has a dark tone but it was just .666 fine which is apparently better than most of the stuff circulating down there at the time. Pix is sl blurry but I dropped my digital camera about 2 months ago & it doesn't focus well since then.

Have had an incredibly difficult time getting any Chilean Coins, thus I don't have the 1834 1R but was offered a 33 or 34 8 reales about 4 years ago. I don't want to mention the price! Right now Argentine coins are frequently seen for sale due to their poor economy but never Chilean Coins.

    KM 198 Chile 2 Escudos 1971

Got this one today and is a "flagship" Chilean coinage collectors item. The 2 Escudos was only minted 1971 during presidency of Salvador Allende. The coin pattern was minted in silver proofs with 50 specimens and in a copper zinc nickel alloy that was minted as official currency but never released for circulation (Chilean mint recorded 106 specimens made). Caupolicán featured on obverse was a prominent war leader of the Mapuche people of Chile (Southern region) during the first rising against the Spanish from 1553 to 1558. He was captured and executed in 1558, impaled while his wife was forced to watch. The Mapuche people were never conquered by the Spanish. Is it possible to see how many specimens were graded by NGC for example?
