This 1903 Guadeloupe 1 franc is a significant upgrade over the one I had, which looks like it fell in a volcano. I just happened to see this randomly on eBay and felt like I got a good deal on it.

I'd agree with wax - I've bought at least one coin with what looked like red wax on it. Nice - I knew Arabs were in Sicily at that time but I didn't ever think about their coins.
