I think that I will soon post a very special coin in this thread, and also in the "What is the most you have ever paid for a coin?" thread.
Most I ever paid was 10K-fees for this coin from Triton V/ CNG. At that time it cost $1.62 canadian= $1US
The most I ever paid for a coin itself was 3950 EUR (shipping and credit card fees were an added 223,75 EUR, so the order total was 4173,75 EUR) for this Dutch 6 Stuivers gold coin from 1770:
Yes, I wouldn't have payed so much for it if I didn't think so too. I think that from tomorrow (I still have to close the deal) a Kushan Gold Dinar of Kanishka the Great will take first place.
Here's one that came today. 1852 Myanmar 1 kyat. This is one of those iconic coins that I wanted to have in my collection. Unfortunately they're often counterfeited so I decided to buy a graded version. I really don't like graded coins because I keep my coins in 2x2s and the slabs don't fit anywhere, but it couldn't be avoided on this one. I bought this one because it had more detail on the feathers and especially the face than the others I saw for sale, even those that were more expensive. I'm not crazy about the dark black but I thought it was an acceptable tradeoff.
I also got these two today. One is for my coins with dinosaurs collection and the other is for my animals collection. Believe it or not but I just could not get the case open on the tigers coin no matter how I tried, so it was either smash it with a hammer or take a photo like it is, and I reluctantly chose the latter.
Good that you bought it Here is mine from his successor. AV Dinara ND Peshawar Mint Huvishka 151-92 rev: Goddess NANA
That is a truly nice coin. Apart from maybe the Mughal Gold Mohur of Aurangzeb, the Gupta Gold Dinar of Chandragupta II is now on the top of my wish list.
MS65, crazy toning. I know this PCGS photo is with a lot of light but even without it's very toned. I like silver coins that toned dark over time.
Some 35 years after I began, I finally completed my Fuad/Farouk gold date set. In total, there are (16) coins in the set, including 1929 and 1930 dated Fuad left coins (1932 instead of 1930 for the second Fuad left 500 Piastres). For the less ambitious, the type set comprising just (12) coins would likely include only the 1930 & 1932 dated Fuad left coins since they are so much easier to find than the 1929 dates. The nicest coin the set is the Farouk 500 Piastres in NGC PF66-Cameo. The lowest grade is the 1929 Egypt 50 Piastres in NGC MS61 which comes close to PL and is very conservatively graded. It was the last coin I needed, and it arrived in the mail yesterday from a medals dealer in Tallinn, Estonia. I've included the 1930 coin as well since it was received the day before from a dealer in Ohio. Again, close to PL, maybe even more so than the 1929 piece but without the designation. In any case, both coins superior for the grade but priced in-line with the assigned grade. These have gone up a lot in the last few years, but are still less than $1,000 in the lower mint state grades. There are other much more common coins from the same era (Czechoslovakia & Poland immediately comes to mind) that have gone up much-much more for coins that are far more common. There were recent examples of both these sold at Heritage in MS64 that soared past $1,500 each. I was outbid on both, then immediately went to eBay to acquire these lower graded coins at steep discounts to the MS64 examples. The MS61 coin from Estonia was only $638 on a best offer. The Heritage coins were marginally nicer, but the coins are scarce enough (mintage of 6,000 and 10,000) that anything mint state is going to be pretty hard to find, and these were a nice compromise between price and quality in my opinion.
OK, some comic relief... Got this one for the 5-year old grandson who is nuts about astronomy This was from a junk box, but I find it an interesting looking coin...circam?
Mein Gott! What a step backwards/ once Germany produced the worlds most gorgeous coinage/ apparently that ceased after 1918.
If you're looking for astronomy coins for your grandson, there's a set from 2022 from Turkey featuring all the planets. Here's one of them. They're aluminum so they shouldn't cost much.
