During the papacy of Clemente XI, there was an unsuccessful attempt to raise and preserve the long-buried column of Antoninus Pius erected in 161AD. Today only the spectacular restored base remains. THE FATE OF THE COLUMN OF ANTONINUS PIUS (researchgate.net)
Recently I picked up this 1836 Antigua farthing. As far as I know it's the only circulating coin ever made for Antigua.
I have picked up a few goodies in the last few days. These two Charles II Crowns, 1667 and 1681, fill gaps in my own collection:
A couple new purchases. A nice 12 Kreuzer from Hohnstein featuring a Wildman. Pretty sure this is KM# 40 due to the legend and lack of value. A little kreuzer from Breslau, modern day Wroclaw, Poland. The strike on this coin is just exceptional.
These three arrived yesterday. First two - the 1707E and 1837 shillings are marginal upgrades for me. The third is a contemporary attempt to pass off a 1711 shilling as a Guinea. Not only has the perpetrator gilded the coin, but he has engraves lines in the plain fields to more closely resemble the Guinea. This would have been a capital offence at the time.
