No where near an MS65...,, However, same design struck on a much larger planchet. 0.835 fine with 0.3221 net ounces of silver. I would say attractive for the AU58 grade and a terrific bullion-like coin with nearly zero premium above melt:thumb:. Some coins I have to like because they are a great deal on top of having a nice design!

Me thinks Krause needs to update the valuations on this series if they haven't already. My 2011 catalog says $3.00 in UNC with no listing for BU. Your coin looks like an MS67 from the image. I suppose it's worth whatever someone will pay for it, but somehow a superb gem UNC that is full red and 104 years old ought to command a little more than three bucks. Like maybe $18 minimum.

    i'd pay $10... but i guess that's why krause is a "guide," not a definitive "be-all-end-all" book.

Notice toward the knees there are die cracks tracing all over from there. I don't spend much time looking up D&H numbers and rarity on these, I just like them because they are old, BIG, copper, expertly crafted, and when they have interesting aspects that make them different I try to buy them. This one went for around 200 on Teletrade a few months back.

That's still an attractive coin, certainly better grade than my 1961 Franc.

There were a lot of billion coins in circulation in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. I think most of the silver that went into them originated in the Spanish colonies, and was recoined by various local governments that took a bit of seignorage in the process.
