Laureate head 5 FR Swiss 5 Francs 1890, type coin. Couldn't find one that I was happy with at ANA (only cleaned or lots of "bagmarks"), so when I won this for a price that I could afford, I was thrilled.
OK, here are a few of my most recent puchases. I (like many members here) have a real weakness for the Habsburgs, who issued some of the best looking coins around. I've been looking for 5 Corona pieces for a while, but I always seem to end up with the Hungarian 5 Korona coins.
... and then for sentimentalists, here's the 2 Florin piece for Franz-Josef and Sissi's silver wedding anniversary.
Assuming that Uruguay already had a decimal currency at that time (not sure about that), isn't the denomination somewhat strange? The design is nice though ... Christian
Purchased this Italian coin from a dealer in the UK. The thing is so darned lustrous, it's hard to photograph!!! I really like the design, which commemorates the 2000th Anniversary of the Death of Virgil. San Marino also issued a coin (a 1000 Lire) in 1981 commemorating this, and it also has a horse on it The coin is basically as struck, with just a small dark spot near the horse's hoof on the reverse.
It is strange and they minted a lot of decimal coinage in this range, 1, 2, 4, 5 10, 20, 40, 50 and the peso. Nice set for collection just little expensive going up to the peso, especially the KM 5 with mintage of only 1500.
One of my favorite designs too. I once had the 1976 Chile 100 Peso (KM213) but it was no better than MS60. No real wear, just a lot of cabinet abuse from dealers who had treated as nothing more than a bullion coin. It's not exactly rare, they struck 2,900 of them. But with 0.5874 net ounces of gold its not a cheap coin anymore. There is also a proof that is absolutely sensational, but with a mintage of just 100 it is multiples of melt. There is a larger 500 Peso that has nearly 3 ounces of gold, but the diameter is so large it looks more like a medal than a coin. Somehow the design doesn't work as well on such a large planchet.
Well that makes two of us then. I like those Hapsburg coins too. I have the Lady in The Clouds 100 Corona and have always wanted to add a nice example of the 5 Corona crown with the same date. It's a super common coin. But almost impossible to find in uncirculated. And even when uncirculated, they tend to have dark smudges or other problems that make them unattractive. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen one that looked like a solid MS65. A fair number of MS62 or MS63 examples, but nothing you would want to add to a collection for the prices sellers are asking for the pieces.
The information that came with the packaging of the coin states the following: al centro un albero, simbolo della fertilità; ai lati le figure affrontate di un bue che rappresenta il lavoro nel campi e di un cavallo, simbolo della poesia epica; sulla sinistra del piano “19 A.C.”; sulla destra “1981”; nell’esergo “L. 500”; al di sotto “R”. And, my translation: A tree at center, a symbol of fertility. To the sides are represented two figures; An ox that represents working in the fields, and a horse, the symbol of epic poetry. To the left in the field is "19 B.C.", to the right "1981", and in exergue "L. 500" and "R" beneath.
Agree, the KM 213 proof is a coin that I would like to buy and are looking going to Santiago to do so. Not something you buy over the net. I agree, the 500 pesos is to large. The 10 pesos KM211 silver is also nice with a 1000 mintage.
Here is 1970 coin issue featuring Nixon from the Fujairah one of 7 emirates of UAE. This coin is in NGC (PF67) slab hence i couldn't get a good image of the edges.
They used to sell for quite a high premium but with spot prices shooting up you can get them for relatively small premiums' these days. In fact buying them as complete sets seem to be where all the action is these days IIRC 1969 set sells for around 6k.
