3 more ancient India coins arrived yesterday 1. 272-232 BC Mauryan Empire karshapana 2. 275-414 AD Gupta Empire AR 3. 980-1003 Didda Rani AE I wonder if I should post such coins in the "ancients" area? Since they are not Roman or Greek I might feel out of place there.
This one was brought to me in the market today - a nice upgrade for my Edward VII Half Crown sequence:
The second was issued in the name of king Kumaragupta, who ruled ca 415-455AD. The third is not Queen Didda Rani, but King Harsha. Nice specimen for the type !
Thanks, I have a lot to learn about these ancient Indian coins. I mostly go by what the Indian sellers call them, and do some research on my own.
Came yesterday, 1801 silver rupee from Batavia, Z mark for mintmaster Zwekkert, Scholten # 528. "By the res. of June 20, 1801, 150,000 U.S. dollars and by that of Sep. 10, 1802, 26,250 Spanish dollars were converted into Rupees."
A group of German States coins on the way from there homeland. Should have them in hand any day. All are sellers pictures.
I found a 1798 Naples/Sicily 5 Tornesi in near mint shape. I think it's worth about $100. It's not P mint, however. It's in better shape than this image!
Every time I think of that line, I almost cry at the thought of all those early US silver dollars being melted down to make #@$%ing rupees! What a waste!
My 5 Tornesi might be worth even more than I thought! https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...tornesi-km-223-1798-cuid-1153457-duid-1486884
