Purchased this recently. I assumed it was an English hammered penny, but now I am thinking it may not be real. Anyone have any ideas? It's 18mm and weighs 1.4g.
Just for comparison here is an Edward I hammered penny. I think PaddyB is the one to know about this sort of coin.
Thanks @coin_nut I don't see anything similar in the ones I've looked at. Most of the English pennies have the portrait facing forward. I have not seen the three dots with two circles on the long cross reverse either. Some of the Scotland pennies seen to have a crowned head facing left, but the detail on this one is a bit odd. Wondering if it is of dubious origin.
I agree it looks a bit dubious at first glance. Hopefully you got it cheaply and it turns out to be genuine, rare and valuable!
It is not English, though the portrait resembles those of Henry VII and Henry VIII but reversed. I thought it might be Scotland or Ireland but I have found nothing matching there. It could be French? Style I would say is 15th or 16th century and I have no books to cover that era - numista might help. It does not look particularly fake to me - just an irregular strike with some typical wear. I will look again later if no one else comes up with the answer.
I can't say I have nailed it down exactly but I think the Principality of Catalonia is where your answer lies. A search on Numista throws up a large number of small silver coins with the same distinctive three dots/large annulet reverse, but there are 19 pages to try to match against! On this page: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=Catalonia&p=3&x=0&y=0 some of the coins of Martin I, 1396 to 1410, look close but there may be more after this.
Thanks! I had been searching on England, Scotland and Ireland. Gave it up for the night. Never would have thought to look at Spain. Learn something new every day. That's why I collect. It's more about the history of the coin, not the value. Edit; Found something really close on ebay, Barcelona... https://www.ebay.com/itm/CARLOS-V-Y...=item2aaa1a6f2b:g:32UAAOSw7m9bB~aN:rk:23:pf:0
I think they call that rooster Chanteclair, something like that. Oh, I can post a new coin I got yesterday, 1789 T VOC 1 stuiver dump.
I've been working on some upgrades again. All picked up from a local auction house for what, I think, were good prices. First two Pennies - 1904 and 1932:
... and finally this 1933 Wreath Crown. If anyone else has tried collecting these you will know they are never cheap and this was a good upgrade on the previous place holder:
Here's my latest purchase. James I Shilling for my classroom set. These are the seller's photos. I'll post (hopefully) better ones once it arrives.
