Here is my one and only 2/3 Thaler (Cleves 1693), which I got because it seemed such an odd denomination, but now know was about equivalent to a gulden, an alternative silver coin widely used in the Holy Roman Empire.
And here's my newest coin and first cob coin. A Mexican 8 reales, sold as Philip II (1556-98), all I can say for sure is that the design is at least consistent with Philip II or III. 26.7 g, 40 x 46 mm.
Some random feet, smiley suns, bird hats and chunky silver that arrived today. The Bhutan half rupee looks fine but is nearly 1g short on the weight listed in Krause and on Numista at only 4.9g
Nice stuff everyone!!! I was able to privately acquire a large thailand lot...not all are shown so I'm excited when I get everything, so much stuff to just look at! I’m usually slow to the extreme in making purchasing decisions, so these six world coins I’ve picked up since April constitute a lunatic buying binge for me. All photos are the sellers’ and most are poor, but if I wait to post my own pics you-know-what will freeze over before then. First up, Switzerland 2 francs, PCGS MS-66: Latest addition to my crown collection. The photo doesn’t do it justice. In hand this is high MS with blazing lustre: Czechoslovakia 1937 20 Korun, 34 mm, .700 silver. (My interest in this country increased exponentially after visiting Prague last year; I highly recommend). Again, pics under-represent this coin. An acetone bath removed the light haze and revealed a beautiful UNC coin with proof-like fields: Filling a hole in my British pre-decimal set: I love big copper and bronze coins from the 19th century. Bought this as an upgrade to one I already have. Pics are over-exposed — coin is a little darker than this, but still with some vestiges of red. I’ll call it AU-58, due to a hint of wear on her hair (although I've seen worse get an MS grade from NGC): Continuing with big copper . . . this coin has some issues, but it’s difficult to find one unslabbed without Vittorio’s mustache and hair worn flat. The price was right and it’s far better than the example I have, so I can live with it for now:
A xylene bath got rid of the gunk in the devices of the 10 centesimi, but there are coloration issues that are bothersome, possibly an old attempt at cleaning. But like I said, it's way better than what I had, so I like it. For the price, it's about the best I can do raw.
It is a 1905 1 solot = 1/2 att. The number at the 6 O'Clock position on the reverse is 124. Thank you for asking, as I had it wrongly labeled as a 2 att. Diameter is about 19mm. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces13246.html
Thanks, the interesting design on the reverse caught my attention. It looks like the easiest way to determine denomination was by size.
A few additions to my Mexico type set. I tried to find these in unc. but so far I can only find circulated coins.(without overspending). These are circulating commemoratives. I also pick up some pre 1992 Coin Reform notes to compliment the collection. These I was able to get uncirculated notes at a very reasonable cost.
Found this doing a random search on MA-Shops. As some of you have seen I have a thing for German States coins. This token was listed under the wrong category which turned out to be good for me because I would never have seen it otherwise. 1918 Baden-Karlsruhe Token
I've been shopping again! Two local auctions in successive days - bought lots of interesting things but here are some of the more exciting I think:
... and these two I bought for myself - the 1827 farthing as an upgrade and the 1699 Halfpenny as a variety filler (date in legend).
Here is the last to be identified of the recent batch. If I have got it right it is an Afghanistan 1 Rupee AH1298 (~1881) for Abdur Rahman. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces85346.html Interestingly the Numisat page suggests one for sale in a link at the bottom, but the coin shown bears little resemblance to the coin illustrated. I wonder what is going on there? PS - I see that the coin on Ebay is KM# 544.1 whereas my coin and the one illustrated in Numista appears to be a much scarcer KM# 223.1.
