Obverse: SZABADSÁG ÉGYENLÖSÉG TESTVÉRISÉG / 1848 Mart.15. (Freedom Equality Brotherhood / March 15 1848) - This date marks the beginning of the Hungarian War of Independence. Reverse: A NEMZET 13 VÉRTANÚJA / 25 ÉVI GYÁSZ EMLÉKÉRE / ARAD 1874 Octob 6. (The 13 National Martyrs / Commemorating 25 Years of Mourning / Arad October 6 1874) On August 13th 1849, the Hungarian army surrendered to Austria at the end of the War of Independence. On October 6, 1849, the 13 generals of the Hungarian army were executed (most by hanging which was considered a humiliation) at Arad (now part of Romania). These generals became known as the 13 Martyrs of Arad and have been celebrated as freedom fighters for the Hungarian people.
Here are some real 17th century Maravedis from Henry's book (formerly of @Aethelred ) , quite the contrast to the fake one I posted yesterday.
