A couple of nice upgrades arrived in the post today: 1892 Jubilee Head Sixpence: 1906 Edward VII Halfpenny:
My first Sasanian. Been browsing Sasanian and Parthian stuff a little, to branch out into non-classical ancient civilizations a bit. I sort of wanted something with a fire altar on it, and this Khusro/Khosrow II drachm seemed reasonable to me, on a gut level. I liked the toning and the fact that it's datable to one particular year (ca. 611 AD in this case), which I thought was neat. I asked Marc Breitsprecher (the dealer formerly known as "Ancient Imports") about how these were dated, and he provided me with a link to this page. So now my horizons are thus broadened a tiny bit. Sasanian Empire. Khusro II AR Drachm / Fire Altar Attribution: Mitchiner A. & C. W. 1188 Date: 611 AD Obverse: Bust of king right wearing winged crown Reverse: Fire altar with two attendants Size: 26.44 mm Weight: 2.48 grams Description: good Fine+
Picked up a job-lot at a local auction today. Picked out some of the more interesting pieces to share: I would appreciate any info on the bottom left coin in the first picture, the coin weight(?) bottom left in the third picture, and the Chinese little one bottom right of the third picture.
Also got this rather nice Victoria 1893 Crown and an unusual countermarked 1918 penny that has been plated:
Yes - I knew it was War dept - I am ex-military myself so I have seen a lot of these. I wonder what the AID was?
