That is just a seriously whackadoo design, for sure. I had to look it up. Apparently it is the "last gulden". In other words, the final design of that denomination before the Euro came in, I suppose. Speaking of bizarro, whackadoo designs, the last French franc was a weird one, too. Not exactly stackable!
That "last gulden" was designed by Tim Melis, a 12 year old boy at that time. It is a lion of course. With a cabbage head maybe, but still the Dutch lion. Now the creator of the "last franc" is pretty famous: It was designed by Philippe Starck. That coin I find cool; another Starck coin design, from 2008, is ho-hum at best. This coin from 2008 commemorates the French EU council presidency. Sure, it had to be flat (this is a circulating €2 commem with a mintage of more than 10 million) but did it have to be bland? This was the 1748 Halfpenny that turned up with the Gibraltar and St Helena colonials I posted earlier. Not perfect but pretty damn good for a pickup in a job lot for not much money!
Classify it as NCLT or Non Circulating Legal Tender. Or Bullion. It is an investment grade bullion coin that is legal tender in Armenia. It also has a nice design.
Nice set, I had a 1965 but the 1 Rand had some damage that didn't show in the auction photos. I sent it back and later got a set in the 1995 which has a slightly different Springbok. One of these days I'll find another from that year range. They are beautiful coins. I actually like your design better with the bok jumping over the 1.
Wow fantastic color on this coin! Yeah, I was quite suprised to see a mableing effect from the camera lighting, it is not so pronounced in hand under dimmer light.
This one has me wondering a little bit, 2x2 flip said from the shipwreck of Admiral Gardner. Looks to minty. I have seen some in slabs on E-bay. still doing research
Recent Addition to World Mint/Proof Set Collection. I am not sure why Krause list this set for $120. It is low mintage but not the lowest. There are several in the 90s with mintage in the 10,000 range which list for $30-$40. There are a few that list in the $2000-$6000 range. I tried to find a 1969 which list for $800 but was unable to locate one. The 1971 you can find on eBay from $40-$75. I paid quite a bit less, so I'm happy. Japan 1971 Mint Set Mintage 14,653
I found that Japanese uncirculated and proof sets can vary in price wildly. You have a very nice set, indeed!
I got this one in today, I don't much like the design, but I got it for $8, and its current melt value is $15.95. Mintage of 6,171.
