In this case the occasion was a little different. While the text says "Symbol of German Unity" (basically because it was right on the East-West border), the coin commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Brandenburg Gate. This gate (there had been an earlier one at that site) was built or rather completed in 1791.

The Munich Olympics coins, by the way, have somewhat misleading dates. ;) Usually the silver and gold coins have the year on the eagle side. These ones do not, they merely refer to the 1972 Games on the other side. The first ones however were issued earlier: Spiral/"in Deutschland" in 1970, Abstract Rings 1971, Two Athletes 1971 ...

Here are a few more silver commemoratives that I picked up with animals on them. I went on a bit of a spending spree with my accumulated Paypal balance. 1982 cayman islands 10 dollars.jpg 1991 cook islands 50 dollars.jpg 1994 canada 1 dollar.jpg

I think the 2004 Canadian 25 Cent was one of the first, if not the first circulating colorized coin. I have a few of the 2006 Pink Ribbons.

If you buy strange enough coins, you don't have to worry about fakes. Sorry, quick and dirty pics.

Newest addition to Philippines. I looked at a lot of these. All have soft strike. He'll sit next to his little brother the 50 Centavos.
