Quotes around the date usually mean the coin (in this case medal) is dated, but wasn't made in that year. This is typical of restrikes. A date in parentheses means the coin is not dated, but was made in that year or range of years.
This just showed up today. It occupies a slot in my prime number date set and is also just plain cool.
Thanks for the info. I just did a little research on Mauger (French medal engraver) and it appears this design was engraved between 1695-1702. He did 200 medals for the Louis XIV series during that period.
A 1652 Commonwealth shilling that will look cool alongside its relative with a pine tree on it (once I can buy one of those, that is).
Wanted one of these since I first saw one. I don't know why I waited so long. The Obverse shows Europa(Marianne?) with the Euro flag. The reverse has a scroll with the 12 original Euro nations. Mintage 40,000, 0.900 Silver, 0.6423 ASW, 37mm 2003 France 1 1/2 Euro Europa Proof
That design with Europa's head was actually introduced in 1999, when the euro was "born". In the first three years before the euro cash became legal tender, the side with the denomination had "odd" values such as "6,55957 francs" (which would be 1 euro) along with the exchange rates of the 11 original euro countries. The eleven flags and euro symbols was also changed to twelve later. And the design is still in use, with varying obverses ... Christian
Here's a new pickup. I normally wouldn't have bought this coin as I actually already had a gem first year (1870) example in my Hungarian type set, but I just couldn't pass this up. This last year example of the type is not only prooflike (MS64 PL) but is also the coin used to represent the type in the NGC world census. 1888 is also a better date as the second lowest mintage year with 350k struck (compare to the 22m struck in 1870). Hungary 10 Krajczar 1888KB NGC MS64 PL KM451 0.400 Silver 1.66g 18mm
Danish West Indies, 1859, 5 cents, KM#65, .625 silver. mintage-150,000 grade/value VG-$2.25 F-$4.50 VF-$12.50 XF-$30.00 Krause values may vary from real life values. not sure what your coins grade is ? rare not really... scarce maybe.
I use the term rare loosely for the Danish 5 cents. Only basing it off this photo. 150,000 minted. 0-100 rarity as 75. I do not know the grade since I just found it in my junk pile of foreign coins.
Still getting used to the forums. I just picked up a 15g 2016 Panda and posted in the World coin forum. Started a thread on it, should have put it here.
Here are some neat animal coins I received over the past few days. 2015 Finland 5 euro with a beaver, 2009 Turkey 1 lirasi with turtle and elephant, and 1985 silver Hungary 200 forint.
