On 9/16/1975 Papua New Guinea achieved full independence. From 1975-1985 coinage was produced at the Franklin Mint. 100 Toea = 1 Kina. At the time 1 Kina = $1.35 USD. The 10 Kinas featuring the Bird of paradise, is 45mm and contains 1.237 oz. of Silver. This coin alone is worth what I paid for the entire set. The 5 Kinas with a New Guinea Eagle, is also Silver and has .4436 oz. Silver. Shown on the 1 Kina are the River and Sea Crocodiles. They look the same to me. The 20 Toeas has a Bennett's Cassowary Bird, the 10, a Spotted Cuscus, 5, a Plateless turtle, 2, a Butterfly Cod, and the 1 Toea features a Paradise Bird-Wing Butterfly. All in all a beautiful set of coins. 1975 Papua New Guinea Proof Set Mintage 42,340
Nice set! I've personally always wanted the cassowary coin. They are such a weird looking bird. Almost a dinosaur. Australian aboriginals said that once the whole bird was brightly coloured but at some point the bird got stuck in the mud up to its neck and that's the reason why the body is black.
More cheap silver. Picked up for a couple bucks under melt, but since these are heavily worn probably right about at their melt price.
I got my 1951 toned Canadian mint set today in the mail off Ebay. wow that 50 cent piece's toning warms my heart. It has made an amazing addition to my on going toned 50 cent collection from dates 1937-1967. sorry my phone camera takes crappy pics, but you will get the general idea of what that 50 cent piece toning looks like....
I will have my ex-girlfriend (yes I am still civil to her, but will never get back together with her) take way better pics with her new Nikon camera and Macro lens I got her last christmas. someday I will get my own Nikon camera and macro lens someday at the end of this year.
I just realized how cool some German coin designs are and decided to get this one: 5 Mark 1965-G I won't reveal the grade (let me tell ya already it's hugh*) but may start a GTG thread later. * another in-joke, I meant "high" LOL
Here's one that I sent in to NGC at the Whitman Expo. NGC liked the coin so much that they photographed it in high resolution for use as their type example for the world census. Hungary 1 Korona 1893KB NGC MS65 KM484 0.835 Silver 23mm Lettered Edge This is the highest mintage year for the type (24.4 million) but it's a real condition rarity to find one above a 62/63. This is a beautiful gem example with an uncommonly strong strike, as this type is frequently found with a weakly struck beard.
got my 1987 Cook Islands proof set in the mail today. I mainly bought it for the $2.00 dollar triangle coin. ya never see these in proof.
