That's a good price for that. You could pay more than that for the dollar. I have all the dollars in the series and it took quite a while to track them all down.

 

Big collector of New Zealand decimal coinage here. A super nice set!

New Zealand has a lot of distinctions in its coinage. The original NZ decimal coins eventually became some of largest and heaviest coinage to circulate in daily commerce. Proof and uncirculated sets have continuously low mintage figures and some of the recent sets of the last 20 years are mighty pricey!

NZ is one of the first major coinage systems that ended production of one and two-cent coins. New Zealand is the most prominent currency in world trade that does not mint its own coinage. It is contracted from many of the largest world mints such as the Royal Canadian Mint, British Royal Mint and the Royal Australian Mint, sometimes simultaneously from two Mints in the same year.

one of my topical/themed coin collections is called "coins with small coins as the design itself". it is refreshing to know that others like them as well (you). my unc. is white. yours has cool toning on it. my proof coin is perfect.... the scratches are on the airtite.

 

Interesting. I'm a big New Zealand collector too and I'm always appalled at the prices some of the modern set-only coins sell for. That's why I still have so many gaps in my modern collection for the nation. I also got outbid on the 1935 3 pence today. It's one of the few pre-decimals that I need, but I can only afford to go so high. It seems like lately no matter how crazy I'm willing to go on a coin, there's always someone willing to go higher.

 

Agreed. I have found that NZ decimal proof sets since the mid-to-late-1990s can be very expensive, in particular. Since these proof sets contain the NZ$5 coin in .925 fine silver, and mintage totals of only 2000 sets are the norm in some cases, US$200-$500 per proof set is not uncommon.

Uncirculated sets are also far from plentiful and with the same NZ$5 coin in copper-nickel, possibly 4000 or 5000 sets are minted.

Every once in awhile I find a more current NZ uncirculated set at a low price and snap it up.

Such low mintages indicate one important thing about collecting New Zealand issues, they hold their value very well and are quite a challenge to purchase in the marketplace, even when new!

 

man that sucks. that happens to me a lot. supply and demand. I always ask myself how big is my demand for this coin ? if it costs me just a little more I buy it. If I never see it in the market and it's a lot I might buy it. It all depends on the coin too.

 

what is your max for this coin ? and what grade does it have to be ?

 

I've never cared much about the grade as long as it isn't beat to heck. The one I bid on today wasn't great and it sold for $81. The bottom book value is $100 for what that's worth, and mintage is 40,000. Strangely after not seeing them for sale for quite awhile there's another one up for sale at the moment and I plan to get in on that one too, but this one is in better shape so I'm not hopeful. It's hard to say what my max is, but I find it really hard to spend more than $100 on a coin. It's not so much that I don't have the money as that I think you have to set some kind of limits for yourself to be disciplined.

 

If you look at sellers in New Zealand or Australia you can find the individual coins for sale pretty much all the time, but they always get too high for me. Like I said in my other post, I think I have to set some kind of limits. If I'm going really high on a coin I'd like it to be something with some age and history and not just a low mintage modern.

Great pics all. Here's my newest coin from Tuvalu. This is a 2 oz Ag commemorative honoring Hades. You can see the three headed dog on his left and even though we can see Hades, he is wearing his helmet of invisibility.

Another $15 pickup. This time a 1976 Proof set from Guyana. I think I found a new area to dive into. Ignore the specks and dust. Pics are taken through the mint plastic, the coins are flawless.

 

This one is going back. I have been searching for this coin for a long, long time. finally found one and got it last night. Spots on the obverse surface ruin the coin. Makes me sick to not be able to add this to my collection but for $81, I would hate it forever. 20 Cents but 1.003 ASW Silver. Guess I'll keep looking.

 

Extremely nice set. I have all five 1976-1980 sets with the silver G$5 and G$10 coins, as well.

 

so did you get the next available 1935 3 pence coin ? I saw that it went for $122.50 not a bad price. it looked ok too.
