just now bought off Ebay. a 1940 Lebanon 5 piastres. an upgrade for my "coins with insects" collection. hard to find in UNC. those bees are in great shape.
I always guessed that (pickling = acid wash of some sort) was the way they got that "satiny" finish, but I'm not completely certain. That "look" is extremely common on pre-euro Italian silver coinage -- and I really like it. It almost resembles a "matte proof" look.
Here are three I bought today for $50 over melt, (cumulative). I mentioned at another location I was buying gold nowadays, but only if I liked the coins. Sorry for the bad pics. I just thought these three were pretty and thought the price was right.
Really, I had no idea. I was debating about whether to crack them out, but don't want the hassle of having to worry about fingerprints like you do on modern BU coins. I guess I will leave them alone.
Probably doesn't matter on the edge-view holder coin. But on the older holders, they are probably worth a couple bucks more in them, especially given the high grades on the holders, something that was pretty elusive back then.
That Archeological Institute coin was the last 5 DM silver piece, by the way. They went to Cu-Ni after that, which the collectors did not like much. So a couple of years later, commems became silver (but 10 DM) pieces again, like that Munich Olympics coin ... Christian
I lost a coin for the first time, so after a week I decided the only way I am going to find it is to buy a replacement. So I bought one and a cheap Afghan coin before bed. About two hours before I left work the following day my wife sent me a picture of the missing coin. Apparently my daughter had gotten it of the box and shoved it under her sister's dresser. So anyway the replacement coin and the Afghan coin came today.
Here three Canadian coins that came today eBay wins. 1915 1 penny Interesting date on it. 1936 nickel 1837 canadian penny token.
I picked up more than a dozen coins at an Idaho shop over Christmas. I'll start with the Bargain Bin coins for 20 cents each: 1922 Australia Penny (dig that red color...it is NOT painted) 1937 Britain 3 Pence (nickel-brass version) 1943 Britain Half Penny (love the ship--The Golden Hind!) 1961 CCCP 15 Kopeks (my first Soviet coin) Rob
Other coins not from the Bargain Bin, but not very expensive really. Start with the 17th Century ca 1655 France Louis XIV Liard (copper). Decent reverse, poor obverse. Rob
