Got this big silver crown size coon today, South Africa 1952 5 shillings. 300 anniversary of cape Town founding.
Also this rupee, 1944. I've noticed .500 fine coins sometimes get this olive-green color, and although I can't prove it, I think it has to do with the copper in the alloy...
Thanks Angelo - yeah, if I was the dealer, I would have put that coin in a flip and marked it up but hey, I'm not arguing with getting it for spot.
Yes, thank you for pointing that out - I just took a look. The Mexican is lettered, the rupee is reeded with a notch down the middle - very interesting.
The Polish coin, by Antoni Madeyski, is a fairly popular design, and I like it too. What is kind of funny is that the woman is supposed to be Polonia, a personification of the country. But at about the same time, Madeyski was working on a sarcophagus for 14c Queen Jadwiga, and apparently he had the same model, Janina Żółtowska, for both works. So back then many believed that the coin features Jadwiga. Christian
1879 Maundy Threepence and a 1948 Cuba 20 Centavos. Didn't quite capture it in the photograph, but the Cuban has booming luster.
Picked up a few new World Coins this week. Posted a couple in the Canadian thread. Here are a few 17th Century silver coins! Another member started a thread about Russian "Wire Money" and I already had my eye on this. Pretty cool to get a coin over 300 years old for less than 10 bucks. Good design on both sides on this one. Seller attributed it to Peter the Great in 1699. Grid is 1/4" squares, so the coin is just about 3/8" x 7/16". Got this from the same seller because I just thought it was cool and couldn't pass it up for $7. Poland, 1624 3 Polker silver coin. I've seen them referred to as "hammered coins" and it is certainly thin. Grid is 1/4" squares, so the coin is just about 3/4" and weighs 1.3 gm. My copy of the Standard Catalog has not arrived yet, so I cannot confirm either attribution, but I think they are close to correct. Rob
TD, looks good to me...i'm almost 100% sure your right on the last one, i have one of those...a sigismund iii 3 polker or 1/24th thaler (the 24 in the globus cruciger). here my newest world coin... russia 1798 2 kopeks o: monogram of paul i of russia r: "2 kopeks", date, mint mark E. M. (ekaterinaburg) 38 mm 23.0g
This coin seems to be double struck if you look at it carefully. Also, please check if this is an overdate of 1798 / 7. Bit hard to sell.
yes, I noticed that...you're right, it does appear to be double struck. I don't think it was an another date below..but I'm not 100% certain.
