Another very affordable silver crown, this time from Belgium and King Leopold II. Leopold is most famous for surreptitiously gaining control over the African region of Congo as a private individual, with the aid of a mercenary army. He established his own private state there (unaffiliated with Belgium) and amassed a huge fortune through his exploitation and enslavement of the native Congolese population. International pressure eventually forced him to yield possession, though not before he had caused the deaths of more than 2 million people.
Those 5 pesos are fantastic! I bought this coin and is completely outside my collection scope, but is big and pretty!
In about two months you can get the "Latvian maiden" on a circulation coin again. http://www.eiro.lv/en/what-are-euros-/latvian-euro-coins Some background info about "Milda": http://www.bank.lv/en/eu-and-euro/publications/pasakumi/the-third-rebirth-of-the-silver-5-lats-coin Christian
I just got three Bolivian procalamation coins and a South Peru 4 reales at the coin show in Orono. I had never heard of them, but they are really cool. The South Peru has a vocano, a cornucopia, a castle and a ship sailing between them all.
5 Francs - Charles X. Charles was an ultra-conservative French king who sought a return to the traditional power and prestige of the French monarchy (at the expense of the common people). Unfortunately, the citizens of post-Revolutionary France had become attached to their rights and Charles quickly became unpopular for his reactionary policies. Charles unsuccessfully attempted to regain public approval by launching an invasion of Algeria. After liberals gained control in the French parliament, Charles used his emergency powers to suspend the constitution and dissolve the parliament. This resulted in massive rioting and violence and forced Charles to flee to northern France, where he ultimately renounced all claims to the throne. The French still weren't satisfied, and a mob of 14,000 angry Frenchmen forced Charles to flee to the U.K. He lived the rest of his life in exile.
