This Pope was in league with Catharine de Medici/ mother of Charles IX/ French Catholics to deal with the Huguenots (French Protestants)
Before that a attempt was made to settle the Wars of Religion in France, by a royal marriage of Catholic Margarat de Valois (Charles IX sister) to Henri of Navarre (Huguenot)
It even caused more hatred between the two groups. On August 21st. there was an assassination attempt on Huguenot Admiral de Coligny/ then on Saint Bartholomew's Day eve/ Charles IX ordered the killing of the Admiral and other Protestant leaders. It kinda got way out of hand and turned into a frenzy of killing. Up to 30K Huguenots were killed that night in France.
